I was so “never again” from my first marriage that I literally just pay for everything* but I refuse to do a joint account. It’s just extra bureaucratic headache (in our case) and I’m going to occasionally splurge when I want to. I went ove

I built a CMS out of an XML document DB called eXist and XSLT / XPath etc back in the day because I was convinced it was the future. It was *%#^ cursed is what it was.

Before anyone wades in here to say “actually, this sort of behavior doesn’t actually turn out to be very profitable”. Yes, and yet they mostly do it anyway. I’ve been in this business 25 years; ymmv (but probably not)

I’m going to tell you to go read some Marx and HN is going to downvote me into oblivion. tldr: it’s not software per se, it’s capitalism. No, not every company burns out its employees, but the ones willing to do so are more profitable than

Hi, I’m an overpaid UX engineer and I assure you I’m abysmal at the politics of decision making. What I’m good at—exceptional even—is predicting, in advance, before a single line of code is written, whether a given UI idea will “work”; wh

+1 for The Dream Machine about the rise of the personal computer. You may think you know the basic history but this really makes the pieces snap together.

The law example is kindof funny to me because my attorney and I get into these discussions that boil down to “yes, you’re right—the Constitution absolutely does say what you think it says about your civil rights, but that’s irrelevant. The

Interesting. I just got finished working on some JavaScript to auto detect two-finger trackpad scroll vs a physical mousewheel and wondered why this kind of thing isn’t built into the OS.

This kind of thing is clever, but really gross (and I’m not even a Christian anymore). Someone needs to revisit the story of Table-Flippin’ Whip-Wieldin’ Jesus because the lesson sure didn’t take the first time.

I’ve experienced both. We’re ultimately a lot more adaptable than we give ourselves credit for. We adapt to regret that never really went away but fades in terms of not being a point of daily focus. We adapt to the new place and call it “be

I don’t think it really counts as “blowing up your life” if you don’t go through a period (say, longer than a few months) of regret. You need to do enough damage that it hurts without a clear safety net. Otherwise what you did was “moving”
