I don't; my side projects have the shittiest UIs ever. For things that make money, I just hire a professional. There have been times where I have put a lot of personal time into improving a UI. What ends up happening is that that tim

I don't sweat the effort perception thing for one reason: My git commits are publicly visible for everyone to see and on a web site, no less.

I just go by the labels. If the labels aren't reliable, then I'd have problems. I tend to think they are reliable because of people with allergies, but I suppose it depends on where you live and how much you trust your vendors.

This is really great. I switched off products that use palm oil a while back, but I always feel so isolated when making changes like this. When a giant company does it, that has real impact. Thanks to the people out there that are making

Same, but I wonder what we lost in translation given what the other commenters wrote. I wonder if it hits harder in the native language.

I somewhat agree with this comment, but I don't want him to take his article down. I really hope people out there manage their expectations and come to terms with reality by matching up their experiences with this guy's experienc

Perhaps off topic, but are there any podcasts out there for learning to cope with or adjust to the sorts of things this guy talks about in his blog post?

Anyone know what to Google to see what the insides of those buildings looked like? They look interesting.

I suppose we're fortunate that almost all of the information we want is on the web now. The age when it wasn't on the web was really terrible.

I struggle with this so much and am glad you asked it. I reopen the books and things come back to me slowly, but it is very hard to retain without daily use.

Maybe you aren't crazy and the world is crazy. There's lots of other good advice in the thread, but sometimes I feel like we box ourselves into roles and ways of thinking that are just incompatible with what we really might need.

Regarding global events, it looks like reasoned behavior prevailed in the end and the friendship is still in tact. None of my conditions were violated.

You didn't say it, but the question you asked implies a stable friendship can be destroyed by "hard" negotiations. I disagree with that premise. Why? Well, I'd argue that if you're seeking "fair value" a

Negotiating for more favorable terms is destroying friendships now? Come on now. Obviously there's a boundary, but if there's a known market price, it's obvious when someone is being unreasonable.

It's not absurd if it gets us better terms. If my friend was selling me a car at a higher, off-market price, I'd still haggle ("pick fights" in your terms) with him. In fact, I'd push for a friend discount. He mi

I didn't expect to see a comment like this, but it is kind of eye opening. There are probably at least 2-3 tools I use on a daily basis that probably fall into the same bracket. You are onto something, I think.

Could you comment on your emacs setup? I see a few threads on this from Google, but just curious what your setup is and maybe some tidbits about the pros and cons of this kind of setup. Thanks in advance.

Maybe they are just proxies for other labels, like "the good group" and "the one we can drop if our numbers don't hit expectations." I'm offering this theory as a bayesian.

I spend 4 hours every morning and 10 hours every weekend and have done it for 4 years now. 3-5 hours is hard, and there are days I don't feel it or am just struggling. What I find is that if I am irritated with my day job, I do better

Pothole crashes happen; it's easy to get mental hypnosis out there on the long rides. Route selection and choosing a low traffic time of day is your best defense against cars, but some drivers are just bad drivers. There's no do

You probably already know this, but if you're road cycling any distance at all, lycra is your friend. When you cross 85-100mi, the quality of your clothing makes all the difference in the world.

This is incredible work. I would have loved to have attempted this when I was in college. The field seemed so inaccessible, and now it makes me happy to see some homebrewer accomplishing things like this.

Your #1 is so true. The lesson I learned was that the guy who was there before me almost always developed what he did under the gun and took on technical debt to make it happen. Now I just put a mental crosshair on the code I want changed

Regarding #2, I believe your observations and concerns are correct and valid. However, in these situations where the candidate spills his technical heart out, you really start to see the difference between good candidates and bad candidate

There is no maintainability problem if the general behavior is correct for all types that a statement can be composed of. You don't need an IDE, you just need a decent operating model of the nature of interactions between types.

Agreed! The Google style guideline goes out of its way to inform people not to use templates too much, or something along those lines. It hints that those features are for language experts. This is bad advice, in my opinion and basically

I initially disliked this also, but then I realized this is a natural extension of just programming generically almost all the time. You use the language to manage flow between types and to define types, but the types themselves aren'
