DeepSeek's stuff is actually more dependent on nVidia shovels. They implemented a bunch of assembly-level optimizations below the CUDA stack that allowed them to efficiently use the H800s they have, which are memory-bandwidth-gimped

Note that Wayland is a protocol, not an implementation. This testing was done with Gnome's implementation of Wayland, which doesn't mean much for any other Wayland desktop.

As a European observer, it's been an interesting lesson in how much power and sway the US presidency is invested with, despite ostensibly existing in a system that is less centralized and puts more power (and elected offices) at the st

Eh, it's fine. I learned about a video game series with a cult following I never knew existed, which isn't life-altering but passes the interesting bar for me. Another detail I personally found interesting is the (brief) discuss

It doesn't really add anything to computer science, but then again the Sergey-Brin paper probably doesn't match that rigidity either.

Nice list! I would add "On the Criteria to Be Used in Decomposing Systems into Modules" (1972, ~7800 citations) by Parnas, though more software engineering than computer science in a strict sense.

More the latter! It's still a very charismatic text that I'm fond of, and it's of course also intensely quotable. But given its brevity it can only deliver so much.

This is the one :-). If I recall right, the journal scan had some additional diagrams some uploads have omitted, so while a PDF isn't the most ergonomic thing it's probably the safe bet.

Gladly! It's the second of these, "An investigation of the Therac-25 accidents" (1993) w/ DOI 10.1109/MC.1993.274940. #1 is a later version that was an appendix to her book Safeware (which I have not read), and [3

With the US freely surrendering much of its soft power to China and Russia (e.g. by exiting the WHO, ...), I suppose it'll a bit more insulated.

The photo op of the US president signing the country out of the Paris Agreement in 2025, in public, to a cheering crowd is also a great fit for a Mad Max backstory intro montage.
