This feels a little like when AOL switched to providing their webmail for free. For AOL it was a huge shift in strategy, but a necessary one. I'm not sure I completely understand how this helps RIM much, though. BBM is about the only I miss

Obviously the one clear course of action is to leave your current company. You hate it there, and it isn't taking you where you want to go. If you're talented, you won't have any trouble finding work in SF. You could take a small amount of

I like a mix. I'm energized working in a really open shared environment (like Hacker Dojo or Pier 38), but I also love working from home. Too much working from home gets really lonely. Now that I've left my last job and starting on my own

I think you're right. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough. :) And the constraints forced everyone to focus on only what needed to get done. I think we can share it. We'll probably open source the map component. We're rebuilding it thi

How it worked last year: - Internet: We had 3 Sprint wifi hotspots on the bus. You could connect to any of them, but if one started to get overloaded it definitely slowed down. California, Arizona, and Texas were fine, but Sprint seems to b

It completely depends on what you're trying to build. I've built some things in a couple days (maprejuice.com -- for Node Knockout) and others over the course of a week. I estimate my current project will take a month.

Excellent! I did the same thing about a month ago (although I left another startup, not a BigCo). Haven't decided whether or not to move in with Mom & Dad though. The savings would be nice, but I live in Santa Clara already and they're

English and Portuguese! (I speak spanish well enough to have a conversation, but I wouldn't say I'm fluent. Got a 5 on the AP test in high school, but if you don't use it you lose it. :( )

Definitely possible. 2 Examples: 1. Miche Capone - one of the founders of Photovoo and a mentor at 500 startups. I've worked with him before, fantastic designer. Got a CS degree, never officially trained in design. 2. Jason Putorti - Check

As a coder, I've historically tended to think poorly of non-technical people who have the "next big idea". The truth is that a really great business person with the right skills can be immensely important! I didn't fully understand that unt

When I first signed up for SendGrid their confirmation email went straight to my spam. Not really auspicious beginnings, but I haven't had any problems with them since and I think they're a great company. Here's hoping the same will be true

I understand this completely because I'm one of those who undervalues themselves. However, I'm quickly realizing that your value is not tied to your abilities. Simply, you are worth as much as you think you are. The final value is what you

I completely agree that the whole standard job process is broken. We've been doing a ton of interviewing recently, and when it comes down to it I don't care one bit what you know or how long you've been doing it. All I care about is: 1) how

Hate to admit it, but I set one up for my name about a month ago. So far it's been extremely relevant, but as far as I can tell there are only a handful of people in the world with my name anyway. Vanity is my favorite sin.
