I completely agree that the whole standard job process is broken.
We've been doing a ton of interviewing recently, and when it comes down to it I don't care one bit what you know or how long you've been doing it. All I care about is: 1) how well can you code, 2) how willing are you to learn new things, and 3) what's your style/personality like.
Maybe you need to ignore those job postings and find the ones that get it. They're out there.
Also, while I haven't done much OSS work, many of my friends are quite active and they have job offers pouring in from everywhere. Consider building something useful, and then throwing the code up on github (w/docs please!).
