Upvoted. Thanks for pointing that out. As someone who lived in Taiwan and has friends there that's a big issue. Taiwan has democracy, doesn't threaten its neighbours, has a working legal system, respects human rights, and has an e

The only way to make money here is working for a bank or doing consulting.

SG expat here. You're right the average salary is pretty low. I'm already on the higher end of SG salaries earning 120k USD. Keep in mind that the tax rates are lower though.

I left Germany in 2012, moved to New Zealand, and got new jobs in Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong afterward. However, I do regret not having spent more time with my parents and my sister. I haven't been back for the first 3 yea

I'm currently traveling and backup to an external hard drive and photos to Google Drive. What's the best way to keep encrypted backups of important files in the cloud? I was thinking about using duplicity and S3

It's not America's fault that China and India have insane birth rates. More than half of them live in poverty and many corrupt officials stole money from the Chinese people and settled in the US, Australia or Canada. Allowing more

Make sure to use Ghostery when visiting this website. Ghostery claims to have 18! trackers found there.

It's sad to see that France and Portugal go this way. No one should support the government of the United Shit of America, especially when you know they are spying on you.

That sounds great. I'll be in China/Hong Kong for holiday and it seems like I could fix some broken devices there :)

I had exactly the same experience when I still lived in Germany. I lived in a rural area and the fastest internet connection was DSL 1000. It wasn't possible to watch youtube videos fluently, software upgrades took ages and video calls wer

Switzerland seems to be the only country in Europe which gets it right. They also have a 'real' democracy(grassroots democracy), which is a huge advantage, because people can vote for nearly everything.

A bit of topic, but is it really required to have _that_ much tracking scripts on your site? Ghostery is showing up 14 blocked trackers, which is a way too much I think.

I agree with you. It's one of the few things why we live. We(human race) would die out if nobody would have kids. Taiwan and Japan are two countries with a really low birthrate and you can see the aging process very well.

Kim Schmitz isn't the smartest person and just has a second lower education. He isn't a hacker as well and not good with computers, so how should he notice it? He had luck that he got rich with fraud, but that doesn't make him a business ma

Seems like adblock got a new entry in the list. Seriously guys, aren't there any alternatives to ads? I just used a PC without adblock yesterday and the browsing experience was horrible. Popups, which hide the content and have no close butt

I don't think thats a good idea to outsource comments to a third-party platform. I don't like wordpress much, but one of the few things I like is the native comment function.

Why would HN need a new logo? This is just the same like the current logo, just with changed letters. I don't think that a change is necessary.

I don't get the point on app.net. They seem to be an alternative to twitter, just without ads and user funded. Ok, so far, but why should a developer trust their plattform more than any other one? App.net isn't open source like status.net/i
