One of the other nice things about Postgres is the pretty much annual release of a new version. 9.2 should apparently hit beta in the next week or so, which will bring some cool new features : http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2

repmgr is one option but its still command line. In my opinion Postgres is more likely to gain traction in Unix environments where it can replace MySQL pretty much anywhere and Oracle in quite a few use cases. I like Postgres, however in my

I've had the same annoyances/issues when using recent base Ubuntu distros. I really dislike alterations in user interfaces for what seems to be little end benefit, so looked around and found Xfce and LXDE which both have Ubuntu variants. I

This will definitely make me buy more Tor books. I'm one of the "voracious" readers that Charlie mentions and while I really like the Kindle DX hardware, I'm increasingly concerned at being tied into an Amazon ecosystem long term. Baen, O'R

You're absolutely right, there is still a lot of dross in there without a doubt - probably because very few people sell their decent, stable, money making sites. I use it as more of an idea generator and its one of the few places where you

Flippa has a lot of sales listings of somewhat questionable value. However the "Just Sold" section ordered by descending price is a good place to look for valuable business niches, as it filters out a lot of the spammier listings : https:/

Unless the penalties from Google are long term I can't see this as being very effective, as you would assume competent SEOs will just tweak their processes in response. From what I've read over the years, basic SEO mainly boils down to : -

Couldn't help but laugh at this bit from the linked article : "It even has a nice restful API so you can spawn companies and file for bankruptcy 100 companies/second. If you want more there is a premium plan."

One of my favourite tech entrepreneurs. If any of you haven't read Michael Lewis's "The New New Thing" ( http://www.amazon.com/New-Thing-Silicon-Valley-Story/dp/0393... ) its a great book about Jim Clark and the dotcom boom.

Somewhat off topic, but I remembered the author of this Excel add in's "Ask HN" when it first came out ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=794317 ). 2 or 3 years later, it looks like he's expanded and now has 2 software products and a S

The keyboard is what I look at first as well, as I dislike laptops without a decent arrow key layout. Engadget ( http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/dells-xps-13-ultrabook-an... ) had some pics recently, including some of the keyboard.

Thanks for the summary. I was drawn in by the magic phrase "PostgreSQL benchmarks" but didn't know enough about DragonflyBSD to know the reason the results presented were of note.

Having 1000 users who have been paid , or otherwise incentivized, to sign up for a service means nothing really as they generally won't be the kinds of early users you need. Plus, this model won't really work if what someone is actually lo

I like the point the author makes that "If prospective users are still available, the idea is still available." Take online time tracking applications for example. I was looking through Mixergy earlier and there was an interview with an ent

Rubymine has a fairly decent VIM mode ( http://plugins.intellij.net/plugin/?id=164 ) but its a lot less snappy than MacVim. I only use it (Rubymine) now and again though, for things like browsing through projects I don't work on often,

Its great that this project has finally hit 1.0 so that there is a Rails based ecommerce engine available - I installed it recently to try it out. Two caveats : 1) Works with Rails 3.1 , not 3.2 as yet, although this is on its way I believe

Just a suggestion, but what about books which don't look at all technical but are full of cartoons and humour, eg "Land of Lisp" ( http://nostarch.com/lisp.htm ) , the Head First books and so on ? These might be acceptable. Secondly, one

This is excellent news. After the long lead times for 6.0 and 6.1 its very reassuring that CentOS seems to have gotten its momentum back and is tracking the Red Hat releases with minimal lag.

This is a good suggestion , as the Chris Pine book is a very easy, quick read. Also, the O'Reilly Head First books are usually good - with a fairly light-hearted, humorous approach for starters - and their "Head First Programming" book is P
