Have you tried one of the website selling marketplaces like Flippa.com ?
- nathanbarry 14y agoNot yet. I wanted to see if HN readers were interested.
- Johnyma22 14y agoFlippa.com makes it seem like you might sell for quite a bit by viewing the sold sites but when you look at "ending soon" you see that most sites are going for < $200. Flippa just has a really dirty/deceiving feel to it, possibly just me being paranoid/skeptical...
- Kudos 14y agoI sold a site on there for about €2500, and the acquaintance who recommended it sold a site for something like €10000.
- nathanbarry 14y agoGood to know. I'll look into it.
- itsprofitbaron 14y agoFWIW I have sold numerous properties and domains on there, in fact I have been selling on there before it span out to become Flippa when it was still part of the SitePoint Marketplace (they did the same with 99Designs). They are a highly reputable organisation - they have made SitePoint, 99Designs, Flippa etc. For instance, there have been a couple of sites which have sold for over $1MM[1] and there have been many which have sold for a few hundred thousand[2] as well as sales in the several thousand plus range as well. [1] https://flippa.com/2677949-planetrx-com https://flippa.com/2677949-planetrx-com - $1.2MM There is another which sold for $1MM there and a few around that price point as well. [2] https://flippa.com/102961-bloggersunite-featured-blogger-network-51k-page-views-featured-on-cnn https://flippa.com/102961-bloggersunite-featured-blogger-net... - $450k Other Examples (I could include loads): Duncan Riley (Former TechCrunch Writer) sold Inquisitr for $330k there: https://flippa.com/138899-the-inqusitr-rare-opp-to-buy-15k-month-news-site-with-1-5-million-uniques https://flippa.com/138899-the-inqusitr-rare-opp-to-buy-15k-m... Retweet sold for $250k there: https://flippa.com/85167-retweet-com https://flippa.com/85167-retweet-com There are loads of other examples too! With regards to the 'ending soon' you shouldn't use that as a guide (I think Flippa need to clarify this for signed out users/lurkers) because as soon as someone bids it adds 4 hours on the end of the listing (providing it wasn't BIN'd) to avoid sniping. There are sites on Flippa now with bids in the several thousand plus range.
- dangrossman 14y agoThat's because most sites there are only worth <$200; they're cookie cutter templates sold on new domains over and over. That doesn't mean sites that are worth more don't sell for more. Most stuff listed on eBay is only worth a couple bucks... that doesn't mean you can't sell a $20,000 car there easily too. I sold a site on Flippa for $90,000. Paid through escrow.com and transferred in under a work week with everyone happy.
