I enjoyed reading the post, and agree with it. It would be nice to read a follow-up post on balancing life -- does being a winner mean not having a family, watching a movie with friends etc?

One of the most frequent experiences I have with potential employers is writing my resume in HTML or LaTeX, only to have their HR accept only .doc documents. How do you guys get around this?

I have programmed literally hundreds of thousands of lines of python without using classes or __metaclass__, as a counter example. When dealing in industry, we can't always hire the best talent, so there is no need to make things overly com

Ted Tso wrote the majority of the filesystem in question, so he is pretty much the authority on the matter. He was hired by Google, and his point is that if Ubuntu is going to make a distribution, they need to have the engineers available t

I think, as I have been guilty of, people underestimate just how hard it is to hire someone. It always sounded easy, but after hiring a few people, it is very hit or miss no matter what you do. To imagine you can predict what a developing s

In a world of 7 billion people, you will find that just about everyone is a dime a dozen. To use your own words, the following is equally as true: there is nothing "impressive" about signing up to lobby the U.N. as an unpaid intern. Show m

Does anyone have experience with running large scale deployments of this? I am not a fan of nagios itself (last I looked at the code it was a horrible perl mess), but the idea itself is great.

I suspect what they mean is that Fedora doesn't support running at 64-bit kernel with a 32-bit userland. The problem starts with the initramfs, and I suppose slicehost is not in the business of modifying to underlying OS all that much. ht

I would love to disagree with you on this (my opinions on economics stray pretty far from normal). I believe precisely the reason America is so successful is because of debt. A worker who does not work a day never gains that day of work ba

It is important to note that roles which are automated only require a shift in skill set. Cashiers may turn into Uscan machines, but Uscan machines require more administrators and support staff. With the money saved with the automated, the
