I've experienced this in my professional career too. When I started being a full time technology evangelist I hardly applied to speak at conferences. Rejection was hard and I just assumed I wouldn't be able to get into a large conference. I

I know it's SF Gate and all, but it's surprising to me that Hacker News is listed above sites like Reddit and Digg. I think it says a lot about how our little (but obviously growing community) is seen.

PHP contains filters for a reason. They are there to protect you. While this was a clever challenge, in general you should sanitize all of your input using filters.

It's not really "in" the browser. It's more try Node.js using the browser. That said, they've done a sterling job of it.

While it's true that Google is starting aggressively they are still using the slow-start algorithm, not ignoring it. If your physical layer is tin cans with string sure you'll get crowded out, but then the connection will degrade in the sam

This isn't much of a secret. As it says in the article Google are lobbying to change the initial window size in the RFC. A lot of people here at Yahoo! want to see that too, and personally I think we should be more aggressive with our initi

Stricter implies that I am applying more conditions to myself, 'holier-than-thou' implies that I'm somehow applying them to you too. I've chosen my morality for me, I'll happily advocate it if you are interested. However, my act of choice i

Actually while monks do depend on alms it depends what Buddhist tradition you come from. In many schools of Mahayana ('Great Path') Buddhism all animal produce is to be rejected. It's impossible to declare "the only thing the Buddha said" b

Actually veganism is much older than the word 'vegan', which was coined in the 1940s. There are many eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Jainism, that encourage various forms of veganism (not all of them necessarily healthy diets) in th

This is exactly why Apple don't lease their software to device makers. If you want to be known for quality you _have_ to curate the whole experience. Android is certainly achieving an amount of ubiquity but that also means they will be asso

This isn’t actually “speed” though, is it? It’s bandwidth. Google’s Mike Belshe released data this year showing that network latency rather than bandwidth had a greater affect on the speed of browsing. I’d be very interested to see how each

It's obvious to me why this is possible. It isn't about transferring "speed" from the wind, it's about transferring energy. Traditional methods, such as sails, didn't have a high enough wind capture/energy output ratio. By using a propellor

I think this is an excellent point. Rape is a very difficult crime in this respect. Many victims don't want to report it and deal with the emotions associated with having it be public knowledge. That doesn't mean it's ok to assume anyone ac

Not to be too pedantic, but I deliberately choose my wording. I didn't say Nintendo made a loss on the hardware I said it likely has worse profit margins than selling games on their platform. Selling hardware may not actually hurt them, but
