We absolutely should have a healthy fear and respect for nuclear power. I’m personally for it to provide a baseline load for other renewables. But let’s not pretend like there are no risks anymore. Although in a theoretical setting we have

The numbers used here are not for security they are just to make the scene look nice or to make the simulation more robust.

In my experience with scientists/mathematicians a lot of them look down on software as an easy and unimportant detail of their work. Certainly not all of course.

Oh, good catch that's a big oof. I wonder if they were just unaware of this feature or what... I am excited for this feature though, naming aside.

I would say no, accurate science does not lead to a good story. But I would also say a lot of people who are into writers like Greg Egan really are not there for the story. I just want to see some excellent and plausible speculative science

So many tools take a job that was possible without the tool and make it much easier, and in that sense many tools are “for lazy people”. Examples include: autocomplete, spell check, version control, undo, in-house running water, washing mac

Which operations do you mean? My impression was that there are many different “paths” to Turing completeness, with different number of primitive operations.

Not convinced there is one “right place to look” at this point. There is still so much we don’t know, one experiment won’t answer these questions. Also it seems some of the reactions created in this study do “self replicate” in some sense.

I’m for pre registration for some fields with big large experiments. For other fields (robotics is what I have in mind),I think the experiments can be so rapid that pre registration would be a real hassle and slow down progress.

If you truly think you are being unfairly treated you should provide examples of that and “expose” the Julia stewards. Otherwise I think you should reach out to them and see what changes you can make to get unbanned so that you can particip

Hey dreamscatter, I saw this thread in the Julia slack. Several users seem to support the claim that your accounts in particular have been banned due to your previous posts/behavior. I’m not claiming these claims are substantiated or j

No, I believe the study shows exactly that. According to the article india apparently has standardized exit exams in many schools.

The study being referenced compares college exit exams as well as mean salaries. They found that the exit exams were not significantly different between people who went to elite vs non elite colleges. This doesn’t prove but might suggest

Missing from the article is any discussion of control theory. In my view cybernetics essentially morphed into modern day control theory, there are many examples of very broad ideas in cybernetics being made specific and rigorous in controls

One problem with this view is that “unobserved” particles still take up a large (possibly larger?) amount of computation. Rather than being in one position, it acts like a wave, being a little bit in every possible allowable position. These

Idk the US “won” in Iraq very quickly (toppled the head of state, dissolved the official military). It was the occupation and rebuilding efforts afterwards that it failed at IMO.
