Sorry, I don't have any specific tips on getting upvotes… I guess just do cool stuff! And sorry about the slowness, it's hosted on PHPFog but I think I need to tweak some WordPress caching options to speed it up.

Thanks! But I'm not sure how else I can build on it except add more sites… if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them :)

Sounds very interesting. Not sure you should be basing your whole life on it, but still curious to see it!

That didn't do anything for me. I'd hope WordPress escapes MySQL and JS code from query strings, that seems like a pretty big vulnerability…

If you're looking for great themes, I recommend Orman Clark's work: http://www.themezilla.com/ The only problem for me was that his themes are not responsive.

Something that I haven't mentioned in the article is that for me, Hacker News is a big motivation when doing this kind of small week-end project. Obviously a site can get popular without HN, but having an audience to launch to plus immediat

Very good point, I should've phrased it that way. But I think the first step in giving someone the opportunity to code is to make them want to try it . So that was the intent behind me saying "everybody should learn how to code".

It is not the only thing that can, but then again not all things have the same multiplication coefficient. Clearly being a great writer, orator, or doctor have high coefficients. Being a great plumber probably has a lower coefficient. Being

I think this is the key to this debate: in the importance range of all the skills one can learn, where does programming fall? Nobody would argue that plumbing and talking have similar importance and value. But what about plumbing and progra

The problem with free stuff is the lack of support. If I mess something up and my site crashes after hitting the HN front page, I want someone to throw money at until things work again.

Well, I think both point are valid. You should learn to code as you learned to write, to be able to function in a modern society. And another good reason for learning to code (just like learning to write) is that it'll let you reach a lot o

I don't think the comparison is apt, because learning plumbing only helps you with plumbing. Whereas coding knowledge can be applied to a lot of fields. To me, there's an argument to be made that coding can be considered (or maybe, will one

I would probably call myself a mediocre coder compared to the average HN'er. But I don't think you necessarily need great coding skills to reach people. The Toolbox really is nothing more than a customized WordPress theme, and I'm sure I co

I picked WordPress because I knew I had bigger chances of finding a theme that already matched the design I wanted. Otherwise if I was coding the whole thing from scratch I'd probably use http://locomotivecms.com

Bookshrink is a very interesting concept, but I'm really trying to feature things that are useful and practical for a majority number of people, not just "interesting" sites. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's a little outside the scope of the site. Plus, I have no clue how I'd even do that with a WordPress install… But you're right that the site will be hard to browse once there's a lot of apps, so I'm plann
