Would be a fun way to implement a modal text editor. Full press for normal mode, light press for insert mode. Could be unintentionally hilarious though.

I strongly recommend learning to mouse with your nondominant hand, at least for tasks that don’t require a ton of precision. Saved me a ton of shoulder pain.

This is wonderful! I’d somehow missed the classical enumeration of Pythagorean triples. I learned them as magic numbers. That structure alone is worth the price of admission.

There’s a hotel I stay in sometimes that has a large decorative spur gear in the lobby. With straight sided teeth. Bugs me beyond all reason. I may have to find different lodging next time I’m in that city.

Yeah, speaking as someone who inherited a stamp collection, the one thing to avoid is thinking you’re in it for the resale value when you really just want an excuse to buy the object of your desire.

True, but collecting is generally a terrible investment from a pecuniary perspective, unless you’re the mercenary type of collector who sells to people making terrible investments.

Although I have my frustrations with Python’s bolted-on type checking, particularly how clunky the type annotations can be at runtime (this type is just the string “Foo | Bar | int”, good luck!), I think the pragmatic approach is working ou

Having seen a lot of work come to grief because of the decision to use pandas, anything that’s not pandas has my vote. Pandas: if you’re not using it interactively, don’t use it at all. This advice goes double if your use case is “read a c

Oh yeah, for sure. And if you like a good time, compare the Taylor series at x=0 for sin(x) to that for exp(jx).

sin x = x Half the problems in EE become trivial once you learn this. Sometimes the universe does a bad job of complying with the approximation though.

The way I think about recorded music is, the instrument being played is ultimately a set of speakers. That’s a musical experience to be encountered on its own terms. Live music is a wonderful thing, and presenting an illusion of live perfor

Differential evolution definitely comes in second as far as I’ve seen. In fact, what I’ve seen is that evolutionary search operators are effective inversely proportional to how faithfully they model actual biological processes.

This works great with property based tests especially. You can identify the parts of the domain where things blow up.

I always say church organs are the original heavy metal. Who needs amplification? Just open up the big pipes! The debut of the Rite of Spring is also an excellent choice.

From the evolutionary algorithms perspective, the work presented in the article is tremendously ordinary, even formulaic. There’s always somebody publishing a new evolutionary search operator with a flavor of the month biological analogy. T

I think the allergy analogy people are deploying in these comments is misleading. It’s more like you’re asking for a car without seatbelts because you’ve never been in an accident. These visual patterns are dangerous even for people with no

For me it’s equally about resilience as it is about trust. The more independent paths exist to a functioning software ecosystem, the better positioned we are to recover from disasters of all kinds that might fragment our software world: leg

You know how seasoned lisp programmers say the parentheses eventually disappear? I felt like F# was the opposite. There were invisible parentheses everywhere and once I figured out where they were, the language made a lot more sense.
