Sure, hate on medium, I’m certainly not here to defend it, but I think you may have missed the joke.

I love the image of Bill Joy as a masked superhero, who returns from out of nowhere and deletes your Windows partition.

Linux in a VM is better than no Linux at all, but 60% of my complaints about Windows still apply so long as windows is the host. Network load, fans spinning up for no reason, the start menu ads, arbitrary reboot policies, plus the fact that

I’ve been considering it. I have some older x86 hardware that I think would be a better fit for a BSD at this point.

It’s funny, I feel quite the opposite. Using windows is a form of asceticism, and Linux is the easy way. Everything just works under Linux, but under Windows, things go wrong for no apparent reason, the system installs updates and reboots w

Yeah, if EWD had had his way, very little software would ever have been written. I think his insistence on proving the correctness of imperative programs is understandable but entirely wrong headed. The sheer amount of insight needed to get

Agile, in practice, has turned into "disorganized waterfall." Witness absurdities like the existence of the "Agile Gantt Chart for Jira." The reason Waterfall, or modern Agile, are the way they are, is that they are sys

Both of which I prefer to the ordinary versions. So much less noise, much slower pace. Only 80% junk, which is super low by the standards of modern news websites.

Are they in demand now? They’re notoriously fraudulent at this point and I’m not sure their reputation can recover from the bad actors in the space.

The old skeuomorphism used analog analogies. I like that this demo uses older computing technology. Generally I think the time is right for a reversion to richer textured interfaces. GUIs are pretty pointless for 90% of the desktop software

I disagree. Constructing a data type that can be in an invalid state is packing powder in the shells for your footgun. I love a trivial state machine represented with types. Trivial code is wonderful; I have bigger fish to fry than keeping

I think you’re wrong, but in an important way that deserves discussion, so please enjoy an upvote. First of all, innovation and productivity are not necessarily connected, and in many cases innovation is not at all what management wants or

My experience with delta was that the catalog, being stored in s3 itself, was unacceptably slow, and for our data volume, Airflow was prohibitively expensive. We spent a lot of engineering time working around both problems. Which is funny b

I’m going to link to my own comment here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41945124 This is super easy in kakoune, requires few keystrokes and no customization, and can be done in any kind of buffer.

Weir doesn’t write characters, or dialog to speak of, but he writes decent prose and well thought out engineering puzzles. I enjoy his books for the imaginative exercise.

Planetfall was great, it’s the only infocom game I managed to complete. I think I might enjoy a mind forever voyaging more now than I did at the time, but I remember being terribly confused. Hitchhiker’s Guide is so manifestly unfair that i

Enjoy! Kakoune’s selection-verb editing model really clicked for me; I had been a heavy user of visual mode in vim before I switched. The great Unix integration composes really well with the selection model too.

There are lots of different irons though, as I recall from chemistry class. I wouldn’t assume that every form of iron you ingest is equally carcinogenic.

Replying to my own post for a couple of follow on comments: 1. I wrote this comment using kakoune as the editor under w3m 2. I don’t know emacs as well as I’d like to. Anyone want to chime in on how you’d do this in emacs?
