There are lot of snippets out there, the most common way would be to target the window.navigator.userAgent, something like: function isIE() { return /Trident\/|MSIE/.test(window.navigator.userAgent); }

As a general rule you shouldn't bother with IE11 at all unless the project explicitly requires it.

I thought writing css in camel case and dealing with media queries in css-in-js was bad enough, but the boilerplate the CSS Paint API introduces just to access variables is absolutely atrocious: <style> textarea { --chec

Exactly this. If anything, Deno can help introduce the use of standard libraries as a source of truth to webdevs who may not be familiar with the concept to begin with.

Totally agree. Just to be able to see the battery level on macOS would be a great improvement.

You’d be surprised at how arbitrary the process actually is. Clothing brands are first and foremost concerned with sourcing unique fabrics and materials, and then building collections aiming for a certain style in connection to these materi

Not to undermine the point of the article, but this isn’t so much a “women’s vs men’s clothing” issue as much as it is a “clothing manufacturers have streamlined production to the point that nobody will pay extra to redesign clothes that ve

One react codebase being different from the next is pretty much the norm. I even doubt that the majority of react developers have fully transitioned from classes to hooks.

Stolterman comes from an interesting generation of scandinavian systems designers who thought critically about interfaces very early on. I would recommend anyone to look at the work of Pelle Ehn as well – another very underrated figure.

As an add-on to your smartphone? I like the idea of using a pager, not for the sake of romanticizing old tech, but to reduce the mental overload of being constantly online.

I really have a hard time with people who insist on framing UX design like some kind of social science that guarantees great design and meaningful experiences . This is yet another guide on design “laws” and “proven techniques” coming fr

It’s not a designer’s problem when it’s the companies themselves that want to blend in with one another.

The way HN users think they know they can design something themselves is the same way a client thinks they can code something themselves.

That is the problem though. As a consumer you’ll never get to know the intricacies of how things are made and why. The biggest problem at least here on HN is that hardly anyone knows how to articulate their (however valid) critiques, and th

You’re twisting the issue by calling it “bad-faith commenters” though. Just take a look at this thread, where even the most polite, yet critical comments are downvoted and quite fittingly really hard to read.

Not sure why downvoting would require a minimum point score other than to discourage lurkers (like me) to lazily engage in discussions (even though I believe voting is in fact engaging). This added to the fact that the HN crowd is notorious

I wouldn't attribute it solely on moderation though. The HN audience isn't very big and thread discussions never last too long because there's almost always something on the frontpage. Not saying it's a bad thing though.
