This is a textbook example of Yahoo's problems as a company (I'm an ex-Yahoo). It's all there: poor execution (performance/quality), insufficient focus on the user experience, focus on per-search revenue rather than long term search share,

The idea that "being agile" is a fixed process that you can write down and teach to people seems to me to be a contradiction in terms. If you have to train people how to do it, and have meetings about it, and read books about it, how can yo

I found that hitting the "updates" tab repeatedly caused the availability of the Twitter app to come in and out -- presumably because I was cycling through servers, some of which had the update and some of which didn't.

You're essentially using the existence of sexism as a justification for sexism. "There aren't many women in tech, therefore why should I treat women like they might be in tech?" The reason you should ignore the current situation is precisel

So, I don't want to be a whacko or anything, but... this is the plot of 2012, the movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_(film)#Plot In the film, solar flares and sunspot activity are blamed for altering radioactivity levels in the eart

I do not. As long as the hardware has been in possession of untrusted parties (and polling place workers do not count as trusted) any software solution can be compromised.

It is one of the curious facts of modern culture that the people who love technology the most also seem to be the most opposed to electronic voting. I think it's because the people who most understand how computers work also understand that

If you don't have any money or any reputation, just an idea, you need to bring one hell of a convincing story. Try getting non-binding letters of intent from potential customers. But really, you're in the toughest position. Most business co

Speaking for myself: you need to bring something to the table other than an idea. Ideally you should bring cash, at the very least the cash required to buy the hardware and software you need, even if the technical co-founder agrees to work

I certainly agree that learning to type is the most important skill in programming. It saves you a few milliseconds every time you type anything, which adds up over thousands of keystrokes into a clear competitive advantage. And unlike comp

Very interesting, but a few questions: 1. Really one in three orders was a scam? How big is the sample -- how many times did you ship to Nigeria? How long ago did you stop? 2. You list two problems: determining if a customer really can pay,

I had forgotten they also owned BerkeleyDB (obviously I know that Oracle own Sun, is that why I'm getting downmodded?). But my point still stands: makers of replacement engines for MySQL could be in violation of MySQL-related patents, which

Given that Eric Schmidt is the former head of Java at Sun, it seems unlikely they'd have written their own JVM if they didn't have a good reason to do so. Also, JavaME is awful.
