Cooking food is a form of external pre-digestion that actively increases the effective nutritional content of most food, especially vegetables, which are otherwise too hard to break down (have you tried eating raw potato?). Some evolution

HFCS may not cause cancer, and this study is only the beginning of an investigation into whether it might. On the other hand it is shown to make you obese, significantly faster and more dangerously than ordinary sugar: http://www.princet

Completely agree. But I'm sure we have our equivalents -- I was writing a blog post about SQL the other day and realized I couldn't remember if it stood for Standard Query Language or Structured Query Language (it's the latter, but does

The ridiculously confusing interface to the Wave loaded on this page, plus the fact that it takes 30 seconds to load and then runs like a dog, is the perfect explanation of why Wave is being shut down. It's almost like that's what they were

Statistically speaking, somewhere between 4% and 8% of the HN population will be very interested in this news. I'll bet that's a bigger percentage than actually care about Erlang, and we're always hearing about that :-) But seriously, there

I'm not trying to be an Apple fanboy here, but this is sort of an interesting example of what happens when you give your users more information about the system than they need. People see these stats and make incorrect assumptions about wha

The fact that there is a market for point solutions like this always amazes me -- but we needed one ourselves in the early days, when we wanted to run a customer survey but were too busy building the product to write one.

Failing to work on Windows is a much bigger problem than I think most people realize. You can write Java on Windows and (mostly) have it run on Linux or Solaris with no problem. And Windows has a 95%+ share in the corporate OS market. Ruby

I feel like if you can knock over banks for arbitrary amounts of money you probably wouldn't bother with a startup in the first place. You'd just move to fiji and fuck around with unprofitable OSS projects.

What I want to know is: if Apple knowingly brick your jailbroken phone now, are they breaking the law? Or is jailbreaking still at your own risk? (I assume the latter)

This seems a spectacularly foolish idea. Believing that we understand the emergent complexity of any ecosystem to the point that we can predictably alter it is a fallacy we've repeatedly disproven, and yet this is talking about altering the

I think you are misunderstanding the article; it's not that object models for data are bad, it's that mapping them to a relational store is inefficient and pointless. The point against ORMs is not that they have inferior APIs -- in fact I s

If the ORM layer is providing a caching layer on top of the RDBMS, that caching layer is effectively a non-relational store for the data. If that works better, why not use it as the primary store?
