Hi! Author of the post here. Much as I'm happy to have this go around again, this is actually a dupe, and has been very extensively discussed on HN before: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2657745 The reason it has a different URL now

I think a major step in the development of complex javascript apps was the development of real debugging tools for Javascript. Prior to that, the barrier to a complex JS app was too high for the hobby developer.

While I completely agree, C++ is both useful and popular, so these to-JS languages will continue to proliferate. The critical issue, as you identified, is debugging -- whichever language solves this will probably win the space.

To be fair, they were pretty clear that their data was a correlation, not a causation. But the stuff about prostitution on second Wednesdays is pretty crazily unsubstantiated, and controversial.

My problem is not the "unlimited" part so much as the way it obfuscates the fact that it achieves this by storing your files online. To a technologist it's obvious what's going on; to the average user watching this video, I don't think it's

I don't care how smart your technology is, representing your product as "infinite storage" is inaccurate and misleading. There is obviously no such thing as infinite storage on a finite device, and saying you don't have to use a "clunky web

This is by far the biggest problem. I don't think anybody realizes how huge a sell-off that's going to be if the institutions apply their rules about AAA debt to US bonds (a big if, as others have noted). A sell-off of bonds would make it m

Yes, but how do I find out about "apropos"? I've been using Linux daily for 16 years now and this is -- really! -- the first time I've heard about this command.

It's certainly easier for experts, but that was not his point. His thesis is that the command-line is really easier for everyone, and I just don't think that holds water.

An interesting thesis to be sure, but his pictionary example highlights where it breaks down. Using a graphical UI is not like drawing a picture of what you want; it's manipulating a pseudo-physical interface using a mouse (for desktops) or

I'm not a lawyer, but I am an H-1B holder, so filter my interpretation accordingly. Mostly this document is a declaration of intent. It says "if you are a legitimate entrepreneur, we are on your side". It doesn't actually change any laws or

Another possible explanation is that the way Quantcast and others count unique visitors is broken: they don't (/can't) take into account multiple computers and multiple browsers. If the NY Times paywall has user-level tracking (I'm not sure

It's a strange irony that Google, the driving force behind the invention of SEO, often fail to bother with it themselves, even on extremely high-profile products. As noted, Google Profiles have meaningless, unguessable URLs: https://plus.g

Yes, I could have clarified that. Here's an attempt: "Relational" data is data whose value stems from its relationships with other data. For instance, if it is statistical data that is viewed in aggregate rather than as individual rows. Or

It depends. In MySQL, if the only columns you select are indexed columns, the entire query will be pulled from the index, which is usually entirely in-memory, so enormously faster: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/where-optimizations

I do too! It's absolutely the right behaviour for a service like pinboard, and it's even the right behaviour from Google's perspective, since any clicks on that link will be from pinboard, and not whatever the original source was listed in
