Sorry, not just a little weaker. A _lot_ weaker. It lacks union and intersection types, and to my mind this is kind of inexcusable in a modern language. I'm not even talking about pattern matching, union types are simply necessary in a

First, you're clearly far more knowledgeable about Marcuse and other social theorists than I am. If Taibbi were quoting out of context (or otherwise unfairly), I probably wouldn't notice. So, thanks for drawing my attention to tha

I'm a little confused about your remark, "even in the excerpt posted here". Do you expect Taibbi to prove that Marcuse was a pseudo-intellectual, and also that his works were as "influential as [Taibbi] claims" -- a

What I find astonishing is the use of the term "Safe Space" - clearly in an attempt to mock Scott Alexander, for -- I guess -- not being "manly" enough. It's really quite funny, in a I-want-to-cry kind of way, that

If you're trying to sell the idea that a newspaper - known not only for its content, but as a reference for style and prose - is somehow obsolete, then maybe you should avoid writing like an 11 year-old on meth.

What makes them special is that, ostensibly, their role is at least in part to hold power to account. So it's important that news sites are financially independent. If not, they're in effect beholden to other actors, whether in go

Exactly. Kind of an own-goal too, from none other than ex-BDFL. While not totally obvious, it's not impossible to widen the syntax to allow multi-line lambdas, you just need to ditch the stack-based lexer-integrated whitespace sensitiv

Indeed, WSL2 is pretty cool. Also, Windows Terminal is actually pretty sweet, and I even gave PowerShell a spin the other day. The crazy thing is you can basically use it as a bash shell, and it gets the job done. My developer experience ri

Functional programming in Python is severely hampererd by Python's lambda keyword, which - simply put - sucks.

This is really cool. Kudos to Microsoft for really getting open source lately. I wrote an app (which failed miserably) called zenaud.io . When I started writing the app, Apple was hands-down a better developer experience. Now, it's the

The OP wanted to represent AST nodes - the stack won't do for that: the size of the object isn't known at compile time.

I have a ThinkPad with Ubuntu 19. I'm very happy with it; it's nice to have apt, and to be able to eg use minikube with docker driver rather than a VM. It's also true that the trackpad isn't as good as Windows. (It used

I got pretty good results with chocolatey. But I agree that even WSL2 didn't cut the mustard, and I doubt GPU support will fix it. MS is advancing too slow, I think.

The Scala team pulled out all the stops with Dotty. It's a real tour de force, on a par with the sea change of C++11. Even with the plaudits he's earned, Martin Odersky is for me in the top three language designers of our time. (I
