I grew up on the western side of the Iron curtain. Not far from the border. My father was born in East Germany and had fled with his mother, ssister and brother before the wall was up. They could only take one suitcase to make it look like

They did. Same with the US inviting Third Reich scientists. Or BND, CIA, MI5 and others inviting HVA (Stasi foreign spy agency) people into their ranks. What, except maybe that states are immoral and opportunistic, does these things tell us

Thanks for sharing this story. Made me smile. Nice ironic touch.

I agree. I have quite some tools in my workshop that I only know how to use because I took a lot of time and effort to learn them. If somebody explained stuff to me it helped jump start stuff. But experimentation was often my go to mode of

I read it. To me it didn't feel genuine. The whole time I doubted the premise. It felt like a literary experiment. Maybe a journalistic one. I don't want to assume. So I can only describe how it felt to me.

I wrote about my dad some time after he had passed away some years ago. I wrote about my stepfather after he had passed in February. And I wrote about my father in law after he had suddenly passed away in May. Every single time it was hard.

It is quite an interesting question if this was in fact a GDPR question. You have a user of an electronic tool providing (potentially per definition of the GDPR) PII data to a third party without the consent of the people the data is about.

I would, as hinted at in another comment, differentiate between people mostly using consummation devices or general purpose production devices.

My SO (born 1981, first use of computer 1999) left her job and started at university again in 2019. She now is studying with people born around the time she first used a computer. Watching from the sidelines I can attest the fact that nearl

I fought so hard until my dad bought me a pair. Damn I thought that maybe once the bullying would stop in school. I still wore the wrong jeans and shirts, though. Nothing like a pair of shoes conjuring up memories.

I still semi regularly bought Rebook shoes for R'n'R training. My SO and myself find them to be the perfect combination of stability, lightness and flexibility when doing rock and roll with acrobatics.

This reminded me of a great talk (in German) by David Kriesel about scanners not scanning correctly but replacing letters and numbers because of pattern matching (if I remember correctly). It was a really great talk. Not sure if there is an

I can't complain. But can't compare it to the M1. I had a 2020 MBPro and am currently using a XPS 13 with maxed out specs. The camera on the XPS is some leagues below. The microphone had driver issues from the start and it cost me

In Germany police went around and even looked at contact tracing lists (on paper) in restaurants [1]. Even while politicians still stated publicly that these lists were only used (or to be used) for contact tracing. [1]: https://
