""Not Invented Here" syndrome: Expressed most commonly in a desire for everything needed to be developed in house. E.g.: “Need a CMS? Let’s make our own from scratch!” Perhaps, you work at a place where all your teammates do is constantly b

A lot of people I know have 40 minute train rides each way. If they can get work done on the train, they can leave early and have more time for their family.

I find the new maps app really good, one of the best driving direction apps I've seen. It is an improvement over waze in UI and the enhance backgrounding is awesome. Maybe not as feature rich as some of the alternatives, but what do you ex

I believe OP is referring to a service-based architecture. Basically you have a front-end, written in rails, and a back-end, written in java. The two communicate using REST service calls. Personally I think for a lot of apps this approac h

There are more downsides than "you need to switch the context between two languages" There are plenty of apps (i'd say the vast majority) where simply does not make sense to cut the codebase in half.

There are lots of people who feel it (CoffeeScript) does indeed solve more problems then it creates. If it actually does create more problems then it solves then a lot of people are just plain making a mistake by using it :) which I don't t

Why refer to CoffeeScript as a buzzword in this context? Coffeescript has gained popularity recently because it addresses some of the concerns about writing javascript raised in the post. Coffeescript is not a buzzword, it's a relevant tec

Well I think it depends, sqlite can behave as an entirely in-memory database I think - so what would be the difference between that and a pure ruby in-memory database, really? If you want to just fake 'em all, which does not sound particula

Agreed on the "changing service oriented architecture" parts. Once you split once big app into two medium sized apps, it can be hard to make radical changes to the application architecture. It adds a lot of complexity, like (deployment,

ruby-debug takes a little bit more work to learn in the beginning but in the end is more satisfying and flexible than any of the GUI debuggers I've used (eclipse, visual studio). Command line interfaces are cool especially for stuff you do

Having what is essentially one app split into multiple apps is going to introduce a whole lot of complexity to the business that isn't necessarily unless the amount of developers on your team is very large.
