Great article. Unreleased code is a liability and branches are a waste of time. If you're not deploying every day you are doing something wrong.

Google certainly has the right to do this, I think OP wasn't arguing with that. That doesn't mean we have a) not talk about it or b) not like it

Neither of them really "solve" sync. It's still a problem for complex applications but it works for say, 80% of the solutions. Anyways I use both and to me they aren't really competitors. Apple doesn't allow stuff like Dropbox to have tig

Syncing is still a serious problem with written apps - much easier to say "online always" and do something like a web app.

What's inefficient about it? Usually this doesn't work if your process sucks. The way I've seen it work well is: Designer starts on the project a week ahead of programmer. Gathers requirements (with the programmer tagging along). Does pa

That's old school thinking right there. I'd never hire a designer who doesn't know front end tech as well or better than they know photoshop. The best designers will know HTML+CSS+Javascript pretty intimately for a variety of reasons.

Agreed he seems to just dismiss Janus randomly, instead prefering to tell people to what...assemble the plugins by hand and just copy his vimrc config? not ideal.

Writing django apps requires the use of algorithms and data structures. He just didn't talk about them.

Learn a language, not a web framework for god's sake. Learning frameworks is harder than learning programming languages, IMO, especially after you lean one language. You should learn both.

a chef is less likely to be as valuable as an engineer in an engineering company based on what? Why do you think engineers get paid more than secretaries, on average? There's your answer.

All I'm saying is that you have to evaluate each employees contributions and a chef is less likely to be as valuable as an engineer in an engineering company, for a variety of reasons, and then should be compensated accordingly.

In general, in startups, aren't people compensated based on the value their skills provide? I'm not taking anything away from chefs, but Google is an engineering, product, and advertising company, so chef isn't a core skillset and should pr

Forcing every feature you write to be service-backed is actually quite annoying. I'd avoid using web services for the main app until it was absolutely necessary.
