I bet it is literally phonetically easier for traders on the NYSE floor to shout round number rather than "Selling amazon at 978.23!!!" At some point the number of significant figures slows down your transaction speed, as a human,

That's not true. It has an impact on options re-pricing after the split occurs. I don't pretend to understand it, so don't ask for more details, but options traders love splits, apparently (at least the traders I know).

Around 1995 I wrote a DirectDraw text-editor that would render two images and force you to defocus your eyes like the op-art-3d puzzles: making the viewer have to focus far away. It worked for images but not for reading small text.

Odd that OP would give a grim warning without an equation. I graduated in 1991 with BSEE and the curriculum was a rush to get us to diffeq and linear systems because 90% of the remaining three years of classes were taught using S and Z plan

alt.binaries.pictures.erotica FTW (There was also a computer at MIT called "zurich.ai.mit.edu" that you could FTP to in 1990 and download really raunchy NSFL porn. I still have scars.)

who cares what your car looks like. owning one is a hassle and a money sink and i resent that i've lived in 5 cities who have de-prioritized mass transit. cars look boring is like saying it's a bummer cancer isn't cool.

> Instead, they use a random algorithm to choose which seller “sold” this drill and gets the money. So the Makita store is not guaranteed to actually ship me the product, it just comes from ANY store that matches the UPC code? Holy shit.

I never understood why this is such a surprise? The frequency of a word is proportional to its rank in the frequency table... what else would it be? It always struck me as circuitous logic, or a truism? But I'm not a math person so I&#

I don't follow on #1. If I'm buying from the Makita store on amazon (because the Makita site literally sends me there), how is that a risk? I'm legit asking, not trolling. :)

Rule #1: Always buy from the official brand store on Amazon: e.g., only buy Makita products from the Makita Amazon shop; another example: Cuisinart, or Klein, or Fluke. Rule #2: Buy books from Powells.com Rule #3: Only buy things that cost

Not OP, but the texture is different. Soak some black beans overnight then cook them, and compare them to rinsed canned beans. The latter are slipper and spongy, the former are lighter and have better texture.

Well, I live in Berkeley, so I'm pretty damn spoiled when it comes to cheese shops. But I can see that being helpful if there are no cheese stores, import stores, or specialty foods stores in your town.

Opposite here: I dislike Trader Joe's. I call it "bougie safeway". Trader Joe's is great if you like boxed, prepared food, but it isn't much better for anything else. Their produce is meh and overly wrapped with pac

What the heck? Is there actually any relationship between these words? I got to within 900/1000 today in 33 guess, and was SOOO far off from the answer that after 30 hints I gave up. Not sure I understand the rules.

Same thing here. I think tooling (packers included) aren't really designed for this, as demonstrated by the hacks you need to apply to aliases and directories. I hope this is fixed over the next few years, because like you, I got it to

Here's an unpopular opinion: it is unstable because we don't know what exactly "front-end" means. First it was static HTML pages, then it was CGI (ColdFusion & DHTML FTW!), then it was PHP, then it was Rails, then it
