I would guess that some people imagine a business model for websites where the user pays with computational power. Using GPU would be a way to make this worthwhile.

I have witnessed at least 3 people that were in a manager position and had unacceptable behavior. What lawnchair_larry described matches almost perfectly my perception of them. One of them would casually explain in conversations the softwar

Haskell threaded runtime can have poorer performances than the non-threaded one on single threaded programs.

Agreed. It also introduces an element of surprise. And also gives you a source of narra "constrains" while you are playing. This tends to help everyone come up with interesting ideas. I lean toward games like dungeon world ( http:

Not the OP but here are my 2 cents: partial classes should only be used when you have a mix of generated and hand written code. Any other usage should be forbidden. It requires some education but it is useful for this usecase.

> a language with no mutable types If we are talking about haskell, mutability is absolutely an option when it is the only way to write fast code. This is exactly what is done here: http://www.serpentine.com/blog/201

`main` is the entry point of the program. Its type is `IO ()`. It is a warning to omit a type signature in a top level definition, so in a normal program you would have a `main :: IO ()` type definition. The `IO` allows any kind of effect.

You are right. In this case effects are not isolated. But in this particular script, there are no interesting things to move into a pure function. It does not mean that it wouldn't be the case in a more complex script. Like everything,

It is a bit easy to dismiss everything haskell related as only useful for "academic research". In fact I am not sure how do you make this link between this post and research at all. Now if you don't know about haskell and wan

Be sure that this arm race is happening. How do you find the overall quality of web media today? Are you satisfied? As a business, once you realize that 1% of your users are watching ads, what are you going to do? You can either go for a pa

It is interesting to interpret not using adblock as capitalist duty. I see it more as a way to respect the terms of the content producer. "But the page is bloated and unusable with ads". Then refuse the contract. Use another servi

I understand this feeling, but it goes away after a bit of practice. In java/go/c#, there are lots of statement and small expressions. In haskell expressions tends to be longer and are broken down in multiple local definitions (wi

I disagree. You are merely used to different conventions. In haskell, symbols starting with an uppercase are types (or Constructors). You can think about Map as a type constructor which takes two other types as its arguments. So Map Foo Bar

Except that to perform the level of checks that a compiler does with a good type system, you would have to write a large amount of tests. Code is a liability, and testing code is no exception. Writing tests in static languages is still requ
