And to you giosch! Wow 2016 has been an interesting year! Especially for us Brits/Europeans and Americans. Looks like 2017 will be a big year also. I just wanted to thank everyone who has made valued contributions to Hacker News this y

At least you gave it a shot! There are loads of things I can't do but I almost always try a couple of times to push myself. Sometimes I find I really love it even though I suck at it and muddle through, sometime I just suck and find no

Perhaps it is above your level today but why not give it a shot anyway? You won't get to that level without pushing yourself.

If you are employing someone who is watching porn in an open plan office the problem isn't with your internet filtering system. It is with your employee so just fire them! If someone is dumb enough to think watching porn in the office

Haha oh you are so cute! Respect and trust your employees???? Whatever will you say next!? But seriously I agree with you 100%. In my experience if a manager is one of those time-nazi types then they are more than likely the biggest waste

Even on a clean Firefox 50.1.0 x64 install with just uBlock Origin and multi-process enabled Firefox feels quite a bit slower than Chrome. This really shouldn't still be a thing especially with Chrome also having to deal with a bunch

IMHO Steve's vision of small and beautiful devices finally came at a time when the technology was allowing for it to be possible. CPU, storage and battery improvements along with good/clean design allowed the iPod to become a real

AFAIK .NET Core offers nothing of any value for cross-platform GUI though. There is Xamarin.Forms but last I looked at things it was pretty shit compared to Java's offerings.

There is so much negativity around Java that I wonder why anyone starting on their journey to becoming a programmer would want to learn it or work with it.

Why can't they just go with a year based version number like Ubuntu and Windows? $year.$month-$patch so LLVM 5.0 would be LLVM 17.09 (September 2017).

Vacations are already being soiled by people driving loud vehicles in areas of natural beauty, now we get to have our day-to-day countryside soiled by fleets of cars and trucks delivering popcorn.

Wtf is "new collar"? Some bullshit IBM-talk for hiring back the 20k skilled workers they fired earlier this year for less money/benefits?

That does not prevent the display/keyboard from capturing everything you look at or everything you enter though. Using untrusted I/O devices, wireless or wired, is a privacy and security risk.

Well you should always care about your privacy. I think the better question is do you need to worry? My personal opinion is no, not for things like telemetry in VSCode. It is used to make the product better (hopefully) and I can't see

Most C++ programmers I have known wrote C++98 as C and did a crap job at it. [0] However C++11/14/17 are almost like new languages in a way. Using C++11 or later is actually a lot of fun, it isn't the horror show it used to b

A video I like to send friends asking about how to understanding x86 assembly is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOyaJXpAYZQ I think the video maker does a good job of mapping a simple C program to its disassembly.

That is the trade off though. If you want a secure device you need to accept the risks that if you forget the passphrase you are fucked. A false sense of security isn't a good thing.

If Lenovo were serious about security they would encourage such discussion and exploration to improve their product. Of course this is Lenovo we are talking about, the company that thought Superfish would be a super idea!

It isn't like Lightning is super reliable. I have had many official cables fall apart within a year of normal business travel and at least one port on an iPhone 6 fail most likely due to something getting in the port (although Apple ne
