I think the nuance is that money is made up, not that it is imaginary. It is an abstraction that lets you live in a society that will let people be cold and hungry without feeling too bad about it.

Where I live and with the kind of driving I do it actually feels safer because I get less tired on longer drives. This is long straight semi rural driving though. I don't use it on tight roads or in traffic. Be interesting to see the s

When they were doing the original scans the resolution was set by the diameter of the turbines, the logic being that they would probably be the only thing intact if it hit the water at speed.

Too be fair, so do a lot of human drivers. Something about motorbikes makes them difficult to perceive. Not sure if it is car pillar design, not expecting to see them there (a prior of just looking for cars) or just a small frontal area.

My only advice if you can't stop seeing things as wrong is to broaden your perspective a little bit. Everything is wrong really and most people really do try their best given the circumstances. What seem like stupid decisions are usual

A big thing with Japanese folk tales that is a bit of a jump for people with a European perspective is that they have no moral lesson. They are just a bunch of things that happen. It is fun to watch western audiences come up with theories a

Carried both my kids like this. They loved it. So much more convenient than a pram, you have both your hands free so great for shopping etc.

I agree, it is an old man rant. It is funny the lack of insight people have in their own intellectual journey. When you are a neophyte, of course all the old guard have all this intuition that you admine. Then when you are experienced every

I worked for years in a business providing support services for maintaining the distribution network to rural areas. The distribution network was run at a loss by the government. Please look at the numbers and stop reactively responding.

Aren't you kind of paying them to learn directly by doing language agnostic hiring? More that you can't expect them to be productive quickly, but that goes for any hire right?

The usual argument is that the scaling of the power wrt height is wrong (people aren't spherical basically). I don't buy it though. So many people say they have a high BMI but "they just lift weights". If you aren't

I'm a mathematician too, and it doesn't make sense to me. It seems somewhat arbitrary depending on the application, i.e. I think it is a type problem. We use an Int to mean something special about array elements. I'd be happi

I'm not arguing that the natural numbers should start from one, rather that the usual path for developing the natural numbers starting with set theory is that zero is the size of a set with nothing in it. In maths they always talk abou

But a submarine doing what a submarine does is a tautology. What people are really grasping at is can a machine be human? And pinning down what it means to be human seems very important to ruminate on. Can machines think? Cogito, ergo sum..

I only had a quick look, but I would guess the slicing is what makes it slower than you would expect. Julia copies on an array slice, but you can use the @view macro or do some loops with a preallocated array to make it faster.
