Bah, there's no need to use cork to seal wine anyway. A few years ago the entire Australian wine industry moved en masse to screw-top bottles and you know what? It's better. Sure, it felt a bit cheap at first, but there's no spoilage, you

What you say is true, but it's splitting hairs really. The fact is that unless actively deleted, every mac has video editing software installed from the day it was delivered. Still, I have to concede that although it is present, it was not

As of this very moment, MacOS X 10.6 and Windows 7. Neither of them ship with a video editor of any kind out of the box. That’s right. Of the three operating systems, Ubuntu is the only one that ships with any video editor at all. Huh?

You can use the exact same argument to say the US federalism "experiment is doomed to failure". Actually, I wrote that with the intention of disagreement, but now I think about it ...

That graph is a little misleading. For example, Japan is right up there but the majority of their government's debt is internal; not good by any means but not as volatile as the Greek situation. Worst comes to worst, the Japs can just print

As far as I know you can use either when referring to the "levee" usage, but for the lesbian slang you need dyke . Where ambiguity exists, infer from context. I think the slang term "dyke" is a bit out of date anyway?

I was trying to talk to a group of residents, some young and a few elderly, about the Olympics. Nobody wanted to discuss the Games, which were dismissed as just another government-staged event. All they wanted to hear was news from the Ame

I don't presume to speak for HN but the impression I get is that you can be banned for seeming disrespectful, either to the HN institution itself or to other users.

Did anyone else look at the graphic up the top of the page and think "that red gear wheel has completely ruined the machine"?

This is probably the wrong forum but there is a mistake in the regex in the makeFilename method. In trying to detect https it will strip the first letter of any domain starting with s. Check it out: >> name = 'http://super.com/'

I think ESR is respected more in the "philosophy of open source" department than for being a real developer. Kind of like the way I respect PG for his startup philosophies more than I do for being an actual Peter Thiel-style genius. There's

Trust me mate, once you're on that $200k you'll be able to list any number of reasons why you'll expect a happiness dividend from $300k. The highest-paid person I know makes about $700k/yr and to listen to him you'd think that making only s

You should try reading some science fiction. It's all well and good to learn about the day to day startup business stuff, but science fiction will give you ideas about what that startup should be doing in the first place! My favourites are

The funny thing is, charging for content does work, if the content is known to be good. My favourite examples (ie, ones I subscribe to) are The Economist and Crikey magazine, in Australia. Both are best-in-class news services that actually
