My very non scientific and conservative parents asked me about it yesterday after watching fox news, they seemed excited by it. Just an anecdote but the news was in fact reaching people

This is the definition of Orwellian, what a bizarre way to defend this.

It's pretty clear Elon wants everyone that has insulted or crossed him or otherwise proven him wrong to suffer some consequence to alleviate his bruised ego. Fauci, ElonJet, and more Think I'm wrong? Let's see if he'll g

If it was already decided to be funded, yes it would have been under DoE. Though I believe the weapons aspect had a very major contribution in deciding for it to be funded at all. It was proposed shortly after the nuclear testing ban and ha

It's an explicit goal of the NIF to better understand the physics of fusion for weapons research. Not the main one but it's pretty important!

The appropriate analogy for this technology would be that it may be possible to initiate a thermonuclear weapon without relying on fission at all. Currently we use a fission nuclear bomb just to generate the temperature and pressure needed

Even if this specific case existed pre-Musk, it's been clear through his actions that free speech was just a ruse to distract from his censoring of critical opinions of himself.

Id like to know why specifically the officers changed their mind the third time. I can easily take a guess for the reason though.

Well yes, but if I had reflection I could make a general 'serializer' routine that has backends for multiple formats (JSON, HDF5, CDF, ROOT, etc).

Interesting, sounds similar to the dictionary that CERN ROOT generates. Id like to be able to do the same, and a generic "dictionary maker" by what you've described could be useful for allowing multiple formats

Still hoping for compile time introspection/reflection for class serialization. Whichever language implements it first (C++ or other) I'm all in on. I come from a scientific background, where running code on data gathering machine

You are welcome, I only learned of it a few weeks ago and it solves a lot of problems. It's still relatively new, so while jupyter notebooks / lab support, using it inside other editors with runnable code blocks is still a work in

Can you link to what you are reading? I am a nuclear engineer, I suspect they are using a very loose definition of critical, one that would imply the entire universe itself is critical.
