This is blowing my mind. Do I understand this right? There are people living in the forests of Brazil that have no idea about the modern world?!

Or you can change. Now. It's not only possible, it's not really that hard.

Much better. Calling the customer back? That would be magic.

It's funny how when you get here (I'm 47) you realize what a bunch of BS all the age complaints are. You appreciate life so much more, and -- speaking for myself -- are as full of energy and ideas as ever.

Yeah -- something along the lines of "create something of value, and then never stop working on ways to make money from it until you hit on something that works well." Not just "create value and the money will come."

Guy, bless his heart, often preaches voodoo. His quote essentially means that you don't need to worry about where the revenue will come from -- just create something cool and the money will get to you somehow. They're saying: BS. Start a bu

Me too. Hope: Google's dark fiber, Verizon's fios, WiMax providers. Actually I have a fantasy in which Google becomes an ISP. I'm not sure why it doesn't. It has the cash and the corporate friends, and it certainly could help make its own (

all of these things could be simplified and improved if the state were not such a behemoth I'm skeptical of that. And since most states are in the same financial mess as CA, only on smaller scales, the argument that splitting the state up

The real point this guy has is: don't wait for the best idea possible -- just pick something that's promising and start. You probably won't end up doing what you start with anyway, but it's better than just spinning your wheels waiting for

It truly is a matter of taste. The fact that you write something one way in Perl and a different way in Ruby mostly boils down to preference. Metaprogramming in Perl? True metaprogramming?

I'm rooting for all competition; I don't have any reason to believe that telcos would be any less corrupt than cable companies. But if we had a choice between multiple wireless providers, multiple cable providers, and multiple telcos, we

Why I didn't stick with Perl (although if you did that's OK with me): - I discovered that a more modern language allowed me to do more with less, more elegantly - Rails - metaprogramming - fun

I'm skeptical about this guy's argument. It leaves out one critical fact: Jobs' personality. He lives for his work. When he was kicked out of Apple (in the '80s) it was the most miserable time of his life. He doesn't want to be a VC or a pl

Some people say it's a bubble. I'm thinking/hoping it's more on the lines of a Renaissance. At least some of those companies have actually turned a profit and stand a chance of maintaining one. I have my doubts about Groupon's and Zynga's

I'm kind of kidding, but Ruby lets you do things more elegantly than you can in Perl, and with less verbosity (hence the Java comment). It's really a syntax issue that I'm talking about, but it matters a lot for readability and language usa

One reason I can imagine that you wouldn't feel rich: because it feels unstable. If you're afraid you're going to lose it all at any moment, you just feel momentarily lucky.

I rarely enjoy 37 Signals posts, but I heartily agree with Jason Z. (new guy?). There's so much negativism on the net in general; everyone seems threatened by everyone else. And you find it here, too, a place where you'd expect to find noth

I'm an old Perl hacker but do most of my work in Ruby these days -- and love it. I'll always have a soft spot for Perl, and will never forget how it helped build the Internet. But to me, Ruby makes Perl look like Java.

I object to any executive making $59 million of the stockholder's money. It either goes back to the stockholders or is reinvested into company operations.
