I tried to read the patent summary with an open mind, but that was some convoluted phrasing. I have idea what claims they are making beyond that a web server and terminal devices are involved, and some information is used to do something.

The general public doesn't know how to side-load, just as they have no idea what apt-get is. Being blocked from the market is a sufficient barrier to effectively kill an app from broad distribution.

I suspect what the commenter meant is that Google could have created an open social platform for others to build upon, resulting in a plethora of specific social implementations targeting many different verticals. Instead, what we have toda

How about celebration for the simple matter that a couple of murderers are off the street, and people can stop hiding in their houses?

Why do you think you shouldn't try? As long as you approach it as a side project unless things take off (don't bet the farm, don't sacrifice family), all you are left with risking is your time.

All of these supposed science/history/nature related channels have been resorting to carnival style attractions to raise ratings. Ghost hunting, Bigfoot hunting, ancient aliens, pawning.

Are you sure? When I did my MBA a few years ago, student loans were about 6.5%, and I thought I heard that rates were lower today.

I find your examples "crime witness aid for police" and then "other non-big-brother things" a bit chilling.

Perhaps Kohls is a better example. Maybe even Target. JC Penney's is like that old Oldsmobile automobile. It needs to be turned over. Perhaps even spawn another brand.

Governments could tax all bitcoin transactions that go through a centralized entity (such as Mt. Gox) a non-trivial amount, which would effectively kill it as a mainstream currency.

The issue for many people is that these ancillary services from Google may be found to not add value to Google's overall G+ strategy, and killed in the interest of staying "focused". Google is simply not "all-in" with some of these service
