A fair point. I guess just having studied discrete before touching TSQL I happen to see the symbols 1:1 with syntax and assume the same elsewhere.

You're working in a database... Hence you're working with set theory. Set theory is a discrete math.

I would argue that using a "clever library" to get the job done still requires an understanding of the derivation for the solution. Otherwise the person wielding the sword would probably have never found the sword to begin with.
