Usually the only time Americans can take long vacations is between jobs. I wonder how many actually change jobs just for this reason. I asked for 4 consecutive weeks off to travel Europe once at a previous employer (I had worked there 5 ye

My vote would be "Yes, if the Patent office approved only real innovative things". For example if I come up with some revolutionary face recognition technology, that seems novel enough to be patented. But if I just make a form with a subm

I moved to Pittsburgh from DC and can confirm it is indeed a great place to start something for all the reasons you mentioned. There is a pretty active startup scene in Pittsburgh, as others have mentioned, the main negative is getting VC

I think this is a key point. Ballmer has been hogtied with the fallout of the anti-trust stuff. Microsoft can't use it's "installed base" advantage in the same way it once could. We'll see how great Google does once it inevitably faces t

You had to be one of the rare consumers who were purchasing a "smart phone". I remember writing software for the platform because it seemed like it was really going to take off, especially when things like the Dell Axim were starting to se

I'm sure you guys have enough time to dedicate to the companies, but it does lose a little of the "exclusivity" for the companies themselves. It used to be I could name every company that came out of a YCombinator class, now it's likely a

A crucial part about "closing"... don't allow them to give you an open ended "thanks we'll run this by our boss" type response. People usually just want to end the sales process, but do not want to reject you outright. You should always g

I'm honestly surprised it took this long. Considering anyone can submit "Hello World" to the Android store in 1 minute by getting a $25 dev account, and the Apple approval process is an exercise in bureaucracy....

It's true, I've known a couple of startups who went the mobile web route only to continually hit the "I can't find your app in the store" support question. Using Phone Gap or a wrapped mobile web app in a native app mitigates this though.

I describe it as "cult-like", because they are essentially taking the one independent choice you have during your work day (what, where and how to spend your lunch break) and making you conform to the "norm". I think it's probably a great t

Most of the reasons you mentioned are exactly why the "free lunch" perk at a former job began to show me there really is no such thing as "no free lunch". I think Joel has the right idea if you want to inspire a cult-like work environment w
