So I've covered all of these topics at some point in my career. What I'd love to see is someone like Coursera come out with a "what you should know as a computer scientist/software developer" curriculum...not only for myself, but for those

I'm sorry..I strongly disagree. You have me on the video support...OS X does a much better job there. You even have a point on audio drivers...they can be a pain at times. But design? Gnome 3 and Unity to me are FAR superior to OS X in term

I'd consider switching to Chrome if it weren't for the nightmarish way it expects you to manage tabs. I typically have 30 or so tabs open at any given time, and in Chrome that means a horizontal row of very tiny tabs with only icons (no tex

5) It scalability is a joke. I've worked as a Java contractor at a number of places and what a PERL/PHP/Python solution can get done in 5 boxes, it takes Java 30-40 boxes. This is NOT an exagerration. I think it's a side effect of some dev

Oh, and the whole tendency of the java community to over-engineer everything ...while it seems to be much less frequent these days, it's still there. Not so much on the Play side, but it can definitely still be found. That's one of the thi

That said, it hurts my brain to understand why in 2012 we're still forced to create our own empty getters and setters, and why there are no anonymous blocks. I know that closures/anonymous blocks are supposed to be delivered in java 8, but

I've recently come back to java after around 5-ish years doing mostly ruby. Know what? It's been a breath of fresh air. Code performs as you'd expect, and when you need to track down behavior, it's usually very straightforward (completely t

So this is part of Pyjamas, which has been around for quite awhile. However, seems 2012 has been interesting. From the Wikipedia entry: On May 2 2012 the leadership roles of the project came into question [8]. Prior to May 2 2012 Leighton

As a long time PostgrSQL fan and user, it's nice to see it get well-deserved attention. It's kept our company of 3000 employees going strong for nearly a decade and has NEVER failed us or lost any of our data. (Knock on wood ;-) )

I share this sentiment...for me, retirement is not the freedom from work, but the freedom to work on what I chose. Life would be boring without productivity. Additionally, as I age, I've felt a gradually stronger internal pull towards mean

Most of us are likely involved with java in some way. Kotlin has received quite a bit of buzz lately as a saner-than-scala next-gen jvm language. I count myself as one of those anxiously awaiting it's 1.0 release.

Haxe sounds too good to be true. Why would anyone use any of the other game engines out there which are targeted towards the mobile world if they could use Haxe? I see many half-donejavascript frameworks and fully-baked lua frameworks...wha
