That's not true though... jQuery, without any plugins, supports basic animation out-of-the-box (enough for the applications that I have been writing lately). Prototype requires scriptaculous on top of that if you want to write effects, whic

Yes... there's nothing really wrong with Prototype; it's just that jQuery feels far leaner (both in terms of API and in codesize) while doing most of what I typically need out of Prototype/Scriptaculous. I'd say either of them would be fine

I feel embarrassed to say that I didn't actually realize that labels automatically associated with form elements such that you could click on them... I usually used labels anyway, but mainly because they were semantically correct.

I went on a bit of a Keyboard Quest earlier this year... 1) Started with a Microsoft Natural USB keyboard - one of the split ones. Good, but not great keyfeel, and lots of typing on my MBP 17" got me used to typing on a standard keyboard ag

I've tried MacPorts, and inevitably when I update the packages I wind up creating some kind of dependency issue that causes me to just give up, scrap the /opt folder and start over again. I've just started building things from source recent

One other thing I forgot to mention: Apple refurb gear carries the same 1-year warranty that new Apple gear does, and you still have the ability to buy AppleCare (extended warranty) on it. Generally, you're not giving up a whole lot going r

I wouldn't knock the MacBook too much. Under $1000 if you check Apple's refurb section (store.apple.com, scroll down and look in the left sidebar), and you can run Windows or Linux if you wind up hating Apple gear. Buy the cheap model and s

I use Capistrano and am quite happy with it, but even if you don't go that way, seriously look into some kind of deployment management software. Versioned deployments, simple and automatic rollbacks if something fails, and the ability to ea

Kind of a moot point now, but I always wonder if Pownce would have gained much more traction had it launched with a full API instead of/in addition to a mediocre AIR client.

Absolutely. I've (unfortunately) done some work on a vertical market app for homebuilders that is mostly written in Excel. If you're using the Office COM API, there is some syntactical sugar that VB.NET handles for you that makes it far eas

Right now I'd be far more inclined to still use SitePoint's, as their reference appears to be much more through, including extensive commentary on cross-browser differences. See http://reference.sitepoint.com/css/background http://code.g

I think it's just the honeymoon is over and people are looking at it a bit more objectively then a year ago when all the Web 2.0 fashionistas were gobsmacked over it. Don't get me wrong, I like Rails and it's a great framework as long as yo

What happens if the backup service goes down? Does the client have a way to recover backups from S3 directly (or from the data files I've pulled down from S3)?
