I didn’t say I didn’t think it would be well written, I just didn’t expect it to be as good as I found it to be. I had just been reading “Paradise Lost” and found “Crime and Punishment” written so well (not that PL isn’t) and in such an ap

I found myself having to come to terms with the fact that I’m a different person than my “younger self” because of those experiences. I am very very different now. I’ve given myself permission to move on with life. I still cherish the memor

My plan is to mediate more consistently. Hopefully every day. I’ve found it to help my mental health immensely when I am consistent and recently my mental health has been poor. But in addition to mental health, I somewhat recently left an e

“Crime and Punishment” was by far the best book I’ve read this year. Not that I necessarily agree with all the ideas presented by the author, but I found it to be written so well that I couldn’t put it down. Really didn’t expect that for cl

Yeah I agree, but I read papers mainly in domains I do have university level degrees in. So while I’m not as expert as a lifetime professor, I do know the fields relatively well. And I don’t think it’s rude, that’s why I included that state

Watch a GM chess match. They’ll play memorized moves till a point and then they’ll be “out of the book” and will have to start dealing with novel positions outside of what they’ve learned or prepared prior. Do they memorize? Absolutely. Can

I think this almost every time I read the paper. It’s like Linus’ “show me the code.” I just want papers now to “show me the data and the code.” And include a discussion about why these results are important. I think it’s a great time for t

The photo of the Princeton students is honestly a little terrifying. It looks like they just had a boxing match.

Interesting, I’ve never been asked for food etc. I don’t typically really bushwhack or go off trail a ton, but I guess I also don’t frequent really popular trails for the thru hikers. There have been my own times where I’ve gotten very clos

I spent two weeks out there and had the same experience with vulnerability. I was a very experienced backpacker by then, but that was a a different experience in terms of wilderness. Where did you go in the park?

I’ve got a neuroscience degree and did a fair amount of psychology as well. As I read the book I knew that type 1 and 2 were oversimplifications and that some of the studies he cites were weird or suspect, but I also enjoyed the book becaus

I just went from two years of professional Rust development to Go, and I’m right there with you. Thankfully we have some terrible C++ that looks to be a good candidate for a rewrite.

From the context of the comments it spins like the individual’s PI coerced or forced them to publish inaccurate or falsified data in order to have a paper accepted. That was about the best I could figure.

I dislike when management decides to join a technical meeting randomly and then spends the whole time being confused and trying to get folks to explain something to them. It’s happened at every place I’ve worked so far. For the record I’m n
