Mastodon offers a lot of great features but at a high computational cost. I settled for GoToSocial for my personal instance, and although it is still in alpha, everything I need is there and it is stable and barely uses any resources. The s

I run GoToSocial on my home server and, being written in Golang and not Ruby, it hardly consumes any CPU or RAM. I think we will see a couple of ActivityPub server projects being built with Go an possibly Rust the next couple of years that

I host personal and semi-commerical websites/apps from home on a 500/500 fiber connection. The hardware is an older HP G1 800 SFF, which you can buy refurbished for ~€150, much more bang for your bucks than a Pi. Proxmox makes it

I've run GoToSocial as my personal instance for a few weeks and although it is still a very young project, it has worked reliably for me. Since it is a Go project is bare uses any resources, ~100mb RAM and almost zero CPU. I host 3 per

Mastodon uses the open protocol ActivityPub, which means you can access posts like these from many other clients than the servers web interface. If you dislike JavaScript, may I suggest 'Brutaldon' [0]? There is also the cli/

I found a way to fetch the monitors EDID, modify it and load the file during boot, but this is port, not monitor, specific. I wrote up the process on my blog: http://rubensolvang.com/2022/custom-monitor-resolution-on-wa

It is just another client among many, you still connect to the same instance/server, be it Mastodon Pleroma, Pixelfed, Peertube etc. There is no concept of channels on Mastodon, but I'm pretty sure the underlying protocol supports

What I am missing is a robust solution for keeping my feeds (blogs, podcasts etc) in sync between multiple devices, using a standardised protocol that enables the usage of many different clients on any platform. There has been some attempts

It is possible to use calDAV, cardDAV etc to sync tasks, contacts and calenders independent of the client you use. I have been doing this exercise the past few days with one guy who does everything in the CLI (mutt, todoman etc) while I hav

Ten dollars sounds a bit expensive for shared hosting? I have been happy with Hawkhost for the last 10 years, which starts their shared hosting options at $2.99/month. That is 10 GB storage, unlimited bandwidth, host as many domains as

A modest middleway is using Server Side Includes (SSI) to do simple templating stuff. It works on Apache, nginx — and Caddy as well. Its a nice combo of "no stack" and some dynamic elements in your HTML and CSS.
