First, it is not the drug but a persons past experiences (usually some kind of trauma) that drives addictive and destructive behaviour. Opiates just happens to be one of the most effective tools to supress and temporarily deal with said tra

This is entirely dependent on the instance/server you join. I can't guarantee that you'll find a pre-existing community that fits your interests, but you can start your own independent server an carve out a niche to your li

My mastodon pitch is it’s «ad-free, community-run and features a chronological feed (no algorithms)». I used to open with the fact that it's federated, but it's a much harder concept to sell initially. People do appreciate it late

I don't know, I have started to think we shouldn't sell any type of hard drugs, like alcohol and tobacco, in grocery stores. Why not sell these products in separate specialized stores, like we already do with Vinmonopolet?

Wow, thank you, this was exactly what I need! I have struggled to find an example of a site that is in production and has published the source. Looking through the (very few) tutorials on this topic is a slow way to get the gist of how XM

Another benefit to the Fediverse is that many clients exists to the same backend, and they all have access to the same API / features. No "official" or "third-party" clients or apps, which has proven to encourage de

Then the question becomes; how? From what I can see, the standard way is to push data, no pull. Data is stored in the XML-file and a stylesheet is called upon to manipulate that data. What if I wanted to make a classic blog structure with p

Nice to know, although I think I need the functionality XSLT offers to further manipulate / select data from the XML.

I have read many comments here on HN that suggests that many have had a love/hate relationship with XML/XSLT. I currently use Hugo as my go-to static site generator for smaller projects, but started pondering if it would be possib

Yeah, it seems like it went out of use between 2010-16, altough XSLT v3 was "released" in 2017. My main interest is to find out if XML/XSLT can be used to write reusable components, like a header and footer, that can be easil

This is what is happening with the Fediverse (sans the minimalism), only there is interoperability between all the small communities. I think it's the future, as long as it doesn't grow to fast.

I wrote myself a tiny deploy-script for Hugo [0], but it could easily be adapted to different systemsas needed. Maybe someone else can find some utility from it? 0: https://git.sr.ht/~rsolvang/pu.sh-hugo

I think many orgs and companies will follow this route into the Fediverse, hosting only a few official accounts under their own domain. Having EU joining in such a confident way, not only dipping their toe by signing up an account on someon

I stumbled upon this document by accident today and started reading the PDF out of curiosity, and wow, I had no idea Russia was so far advanced in (NN)EMP tech, and that EMPs plays such a crucial role in the conflict between east and west.

Give the latest Fedora a spin! After 10 years of Arch I have been pleasantly suprised by the completeness and performance of Fedora since version 34. Version 36 is set to be released in a couple of days.

Most people come to Mastodon seeking out viable alternatives to FB and Twitter, and many of them proudly announce to their Mastodon followers when they have deleted their FAANG accounts. This might change when Mastodon attracts more non-tec

I use it (almost) daily and really like it. The biggest challenge coming from Twitter to Mastodon is that your feed is quite empty and you have to actively curate who you follow over some time – no algorithm. Since this was one of the main

This underscores the importance of federated social media like Mastodon, which offers a broad range of instances (servers/communities) that never will be owned and controlled by a single guy.

I am in the middle of Moneyland now after seeing it recommended here on HN. A fascinating and horrifying read that also provides some context to what is happening in Ukraine.
