Mastodon offers a lot of great features but at a high computational cost. I settled for GoToSocial for my personal instance, and although it is still in alpha, everything I need is there and it is stable and barely uses any resources. The setup and maintenance/upgrades is simple since there is very few moving parts, which makes it perfect to host on my home server. I tried, and gave up, setting up Mastodon several times in the past as I got choice paralysis from all the different ways to set it up. That was a few years ago, but from what I hear, it is still a somewhat daunting task.
