That isn't a very good synopsis. In all his books, he compares a "great" company to its closest, best competitor and look at what they do differently across many industries. That is pretty interesting and can give clues on wh

I was confused by the claim that JSON parsers do not handle 64-bit integers. If the parser is written in Javascript, then it has a problem because Javascript does not support 64-bit integers. But I have not seen that problem in any other la

You are right that the ES and DB schemas shouldn't be directly tied together. That is why I have specific DB functions that output the correct format for ES and only those functions need to change if the ES or DB schemas change. It is

Do people who buy hay for horses actually have this problem? Do they really care about the highest quality? If they do then maybe it is a good idea (there are other things to consider like market size). If they do not have this problem, the

Yes there are significant differences in terms of feature, implementation, etc but they have the same goal: manage source code versions.

No not really. CVS and git are basically the same thing but git is a lot better in many ways. I don't know if noms is really the git for data but those other tools are more like CVS in this analogy: clunky and slow.

Very interesting, I think we need a git for data. What is the performance of diffs and merges? What data size does it become too slow?

Has Google and/or Microsoft made significant advances in keyword relevance algorithms specifically? Google is a combination of keyword relevance + reputation (PageRank) + semantics (word2vec) + AI + other stuff when combined is the bes

You can do semantic search with Solr and ES, it just isn't built-in. But it has support for stemming and synonyms which are the building blocks. You have create the synonyms file yourself with word2vec or a similar algorithm.

With Elasticsearch and Solr, you can easily customize analysis and scoring. There are several scoring algorithms built into them [1] such as BM25 (the default now) which is considered the state of the art for keyword relevance. For analysis

For Github organizations, can't you forward notifications to a mailing list? Then everyone on the mailing list can see everyone's comments and respond through email but you still get to keep Github and all of its advantages.

Yes there are huge differences between quality and performance. Apache Lucene (powers Solr and ES) is still the best by far. However if Postgres search works well enough for your use case then great. As others have said, it is one less depe
