I agree that actually persisting data reliability is tablestakes for a database, which I would assume Ed takes for granted this needs to work. Obviously lots of non trivial stuff there but this post seems to be more about database product d

I think the recommendation for c/c++ in Bazel is to use this: https://github.com/hedronvision/bazel-compile-commands-extra... And use the compile command json file to power clangd. I'm not a vscode person but

Does anyone know how IDE support for Buck2 is? I couldn't find anything except some xcode config rules. Half the battle with Bazel/Buck/etc is that getting and IDE or LSP to work for C++/Java/Kotlin/Swift/

I see someone mentioned zerotier, tailscale has a good comparison doc: https://tailscale.com/compare/zerotier/

I've been considering using tailscale for SSHing into my desktop when I work somewhere else like a coffee shop, etc. Do folks recommend it for this use case or is there another product people would recommend?

The comment isn't about the language but the ecosystem, which yes it's hyperbole, but seems to generally hold true. The node ecosystem has a ton of churn

Yes, I had 16 cores and I gave up on the this version after several minutes. I don't remember the disk throughput difference but it was significant

You're comparing a startup to a large corporation. My assumption here is that Google is terrified of the legal issues of raw interactions with an LLM and it saying something wrong or hateful. In terms of search it has a lot to lose if

In college we had a class registration system that was first come first serve and enrollment started at 6am or something. I created a small script in selenium to automate this so all I had to do was have my laptop running and at 6am it woul

Hello, Shortwave engineer here! First of all, this is entirely an opt-in feature, so if you don't use it it's not sent anywhere outside of Gmail and our services. We also have opt'd out of OpenAI's usage of our API reque

Personally I think this is much easier to digest than the above link: https://manishearth.github.io/blog/2017/01/14/stop-ascribing... It starts by breaking down common Unicode assumptions folks have

I think you could argue for the clarity (code is read more than written) and consistency (why do I need this here and not in other places?)

I would recommend using PostCSS. It allows you to compile future CSS for browsers today. When you feel comfortable with browser support you can just remove the processing step

I remember the main argument against this is that you can always enforce this with a linter and either way it's not a slower parser, maybe slightly more complex. Personally I do agree and I like the explicitness of always having the &a

I asked how it helps with z-indexes not XY? Also drop downs are "attached" to some element in the UI, and you probably want those menus to scroll with the page

How does position:fixed help with the z-index? Also doesn't this mean you have to listen for scroll events this way and update the XY coordinates for things like dropdowns?

How do people normally manage z-indexes? I've found it's usually a mess of a people hard coding a bunch of values all over the place. Using CSS-in-JS we at least make constants so we can do stuff like: `const STICKY_HEADER_Z = TOO

I'm not criticizing Rust, I really like Rust and think it's great, along with the trend of more things written in it. At the same time assuming you'll never get a memory issue is over the top.

FWIW milli does use unsafe in places. Also I would recommend not conflating no GC and performance. There are lots of reasons for Rust being fast and many have nothing to do with no GC. The main reasons a lot of languages with GC are slower

▲

Milli uses unsafe for what it's worth so it's not as safe as you may think. I do assume any post with "written in rust" does better on hacker news.

I worked at Google, then created a bunch of stuff with Bazel (ie most of shortwave.com is built with Bazel). I've picked stuff up over a few years and often study open source rule sets to learn how stuff works under the hood

This looks great! I'm interested to know what is the path forward to create revenue from this product? I would hesitant to adopt a tool like this that would go belly up when the money runs dry.

Haha yeah I understand this well. I'm the Bazel guy at our company. Basic stuff is simple but as soon as you dip into more complex stuff like the queries and buildozer you quickly need to have a lot of information to be productive
