Part of what makes keyboard + mouse so efficient is that you're sitting at a desk while using it. I've never been quite sure how a phone + keyboard/mouse is supposed to work. And if you plug it into a screen and sit at a de

It's going to be a long time before keyboards and mice are replaced for things like spreadsheets, graphic design, coding, or writing. If all you're doing is texting or facebook, sure -- tablets are great. But any sort of precisi

I wasn't trying to pretend. As I said, I went into science because I like science. If I wanted to get paid as much as possible I would've done something else.

I made approximately $30k as a grad student (5 yrs) and ~$50k as a post-doc (2.5 yrs). I probably could've made more in a different industry, but it was plenty to live on at the time. It would've been a different story if I'

I have never heard of a professor "forgoing their own salary" to keep the lights on. I'd be surprised if this was allowed, actually. Also, for what it's worth, I did a PhD and a post-doc and have a nice biotech job that

That's like saying "a transporter would allow you to instantly teleport an object from one place to another". You're describing something that has no basis in existing technology. Currently nanomachines are simple mech

Yes, you're missing a lot. Your response is basically science fiction. Take a look at these statistics [1] showing cancer mortality rates over the last few decades and you'll see that we are not, in fact, making rapid advances o

Clinical trials are essential not just for safety, but to show efficacy. Most drugs fail in expensive clinical trials due to lack of efficacy. The reason the number is so large is because Pharma companies have to pay for all the drugs tha

I agree. I hate how certain programs (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite) feel the need to re-invent UX paradigms in every new version. I 99% don't care how an app looks if it's useful.

Can anyone else comment on the viability of this option? It seems pretty nice, from the website, but I'd like to hear more about it's reputation in the security community.

My dad finds sites like Reddit/Digg/HN totally overwhelming, and I doubt he's alone. It's generational. Sites like NYT use standard design techniques to direct your attention (font size, etc) that work really well for

I frequently use emacs when SSHed into remote servers where terminal mode is the only option. When I run it locally I still prefer terminal mode out of familiarity, I guess. Also, I'm usually working on shell scripts or the like. And

My favorite is the rule of 7 : You're ready to graduate when the number of first-author publications you've published, plus the number of years you've been in grad school, equals 7. Tongue-in-cheek, obviously, but not a bad guideline.

Not trolling. I work in biotech. This industry lives and dies on IP. It literally costs hundreds of millions of dollars to run clinical trials and most of them fail. If someone else can come along and make a knock-off of your product an
