If researchers would stop voluntarily sending their papers to private, for-profit journals then this wouldn't be an issue.

This is nice, but you can lose notes if you write in multiple Papier tabs. One has to be careful that they don't have another open Papier tab before they start note-taking.

Fair-enough. I'm not an insulin expert so perhaps I don't appreciate the particular challenges here. But the way it was described on the website didn't make the task sound too impressive. I was also struck by the money invo

Don't get me wrong: synthesizing compounds and expressing proteins is not that hard. Those things can be done in a garage. Extensive pharmacological testing in cultured cells and animals is much, much harder. I respect what you'

I'm a biologist who works in the pharmaceutical industry. I like the idea of open source insulin as much as the next guy. But. I just took a look at their website and it's a complete joke, frankly. It's basically a high-s

But as forrestthewoods pointed out, if the improvements in the new version are so marginal, then you'd think there would be a booming market for the old version if it was cheaper (generic). So what's stopping the generic manufact

This is my question, too. Can iOS updates be applied to a locked phone? Seems like it should be a simple yes/no answer (and I thought the answer was 'no') but I can't find any clarity here or elsewhere.

Can someone explain this to me? The FBI requests a new version of iOS to be installed on a single phone that was involved in the attack. What, exactly, does this mean? If the phone is locked, how will they install new software on it witho

That's a reasonable description of some common concerns with covalent drugs, but to say that they haven't had much impact in the clinic is misleading. See, for example * Beta lactam antibiotics (e.g. penicillin) * Aspirin * Prilo

How come error-bars are so unusual in these sorts of libraries? I'm a scientist and NEVER make charts without error-bars on it, but they're rarely included in charting libraries and when they are it feels like an afterthought.

From someone who works in the biotech industry, this is utter rubbish. Most good ideas in biopharma are wrong and don't work. You don't get to really test them out in a meaningful way until you get into human clinical trials. I

HN doesn't have a mobile-specific interface. It renders fine on a phone/tablet, but you have to do a lot of annoying zooming/scrolling.
