I'm in Bogotá. Traffic here is worse than anything in San Francisco. The main danger is probably the motorcycles, flying between cars, sometimes with inches to spare. I don't know the fatality stats, but they must be worse than th

Does this book give ways to deal with the following: a mobile app that works offline (local replica), and then when it's online, syncs (through a server) with other devices' local replicas? I don't even know what to call this

There is something elegant about having all functions at the top level (or module) scope, `foo(x, y, z)`, but I there is also something really nice about function names scoped to the thing/noun/subject: `x.foo(a, b)`. As far as I

By the way, does java.util.logging still suck enough to justify the existence of all these different logging frameworks?

I'm guessing that Loom (lightweight threads) is not in this yet. It looked like a nicer way to handle "async" code, but I wonder about the implementation difficulty.

Interesting. Thanks! I've been using a lot of Swift lately, and they have a generic type roadmap that talks about "existential types" and being able to "open" an existential. This looks very similar.

Looking at the new features. Can anyone say what dependent function types are good for? In the example ( https://dotty.epfl.ch/docs/reference/new-types/dependent-fun... ), what's the difference between: de

I do not understand why Chevy dropped the Volt. It seemed ideal to me. Run on electric mostly, but have a little gas generator on board so don't get stuck anywhere.

Okay, so if I understand correctly, the data in those Apple products is not secured, but turning on iCloud on a device does not ruin encryption for other apps that take it seriously. So if I have an app that uses Keychain (end-to-end encryp

Anyone else unable to update the Telegram macOS app? In the "App Store" app, it downloads, and then a popup says: "Telegram could not be installed. Please try again later." It's been doing that for a week. (macOS 11

Fidelity has zero commission stock trades. Commission on option contracts seem low (~0.65 per contract). I seemed to be getting slightly better prices with Fidelity than Robinhood. Even before this latest fiasco, I wasn't seeing the po

Meditate. When I started I was surprised to discover "slower" thoughts that took time to arise, but were of higher quality. The noisy, fast, surface thoughts are often more conventional - echos of what I've been told. Silence

Most of what I like about SwiftUI is the syntax. I wonder if I'd be better off using Swift function builder syntax to build UI/NSView hierarchies and layout.

Yup, I wonder same thing. Besides the docs, it's the lack of comments and help on the "developer forums". They are content to let developers flail and struggle with a topic for years rather than take some time to help. It c

I'm using it in production, but a few situations that I could handle with autolayout constraints seem impossible in SwiftUI. Examples here: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/664283 In these 1% cases,

I'd use Swift-on-server for web apps if there were a way to compile Swift to JS, like you can with Kotlin. As far as I know, there is not a good way to do this.

I find it frustrating that stored procedures can't start and stop transactions. Without that ability, you can't really move application logic into the database. [edit: Doh, I'm wrong. Sorry. I'll leave the comment here.]
