I think there will be statistics for the performance of Russian helicopters against western MANPADS from Afghanistan during the 80s. I'm not expecting that the MANPADS will have got worse since then.

The point was the OS, that is what let you run workstation software of the time. Being able to add a lot (for the time) of RAM was important too, your A310 doesn't seem to be able to have 16MB. EDIT: This is a thread about UNIX.

Not sure that is completely true. People working in construction or hospitality are probably happy for now that there are fewer people competing with them for jobs.

The one Grisham book that I have read felt like the author had not done enough research. It was set mostly in Europe and contained a lot of minor details that were wrong.

Mine predated the TIGA standard, it is a NEC card. I ported GNU binutils to it then wrote some 34010 assembler functions for X11 to call to do basic 2D graphics operations.

My PC from 1987 was competitive with any workstation of the time but a lot cheaper. A 386DX-25 with 16MB RAM, a TMS34010 GPU and ESDI disks.

I got the feeling that the GP post meant a MMU that protected GPU threads from each other, not just an IOMMU between GPU and CPU.
