Source for “sea level rises will massively reduce the amount of arable land”? Seems like an exaggeration. My naive estimate would be that maybe 1% of arable land would be destroyed by sea level. I’m far more concerned about drought.

Agreed. And I think these changes will still develop slowly enough to adapt to. It would really surprise me if the Midwest and eastern US farmland doesn’t stay productive for a long, long time. But it would not surprise me if there are occa

Ha… it’s not like the earthquake will stop at I-5 like it’s a magic shield. If the quake knocks out utilities and services everywhere west of the cascades, this I-5 ‘line’ is meaningless.

Easier said than done. No system with real usage can achieve 100% up time. When problems inevitably occur, what do you expect Stripe to do? Wait until 10am the next morning??

Thanks for the anecdote. “it’ll be alright at any scale” is just naive.

Not always that simple. 2-3 times a week is nothing! Try being on call in AWS, or any product/service at that scale. How often you get paged has less to do with your organization and more to do with the scale of your systems and busine

Inevitable. Working 2 hours a day while getting paid 300K+ is unsustainable. Most of the Googlers I know have been spending 20% of their time on Google and 80% on side projects for the past year now.

There are certainly managers and directors that would be mesmerized by the architecture diagram in your example, and immediately put that dev up for promo.

There is heavy investment into anti-drone weapons and defense systems. Directed energy weapons in particular are quite effective against small drones.

Take it from people who have lived in Seattle, it’s not the amount of rainfall. In the winter months you can literally go weeks without seeing clear skies.

Is it fair to call dating preferences “race discrimination”? And without looking at any real stats, I’d guess that the US has more interracial dating/marriage than most countries.

Manpuku Tokyo BBQ in LA does charcoal bbq at the table. As long as they don’t ban that, we’ll be fine.

That could be true but the impact would still be limited compared to 2008. Credit/bank failures are far worse for the general economy than some tech startups failing.

All those crazy 500k+ offers going around over the last 6 months are already softer thanks to RSU value dropping. Some people are already getting 30% less then they thought they were getting (at least for now).

You know it’s ok to get rejected on an interview. Almost everyone has been! You don’t need to have an excuse about wrong level even if it is true.

Very successful is a stretch. It’s a transactional business for cryptocurrency. Their large margin depends completely on inflated crypto prices.

After GDPR almost all companies need to have something like a “universal delete”. There are safer ways to deal with data retention policies but I can understand why such a script exists.

So many opportunities missed to avoid this! Look at one ID and ensure it is what you expect it to be. Run the script in a dryrun mode. Run the script for 1 customer. Probably more!

I’ve seen way too many people show up after a 12 week “SWE interview bootcamp”, pass interviews, and not know how to read an API doc and write code against it. I’ll take the experienced dev.
