Are there any "open" search index initiatives going on? Like a curated wikipedia/openstreemap of internet search indexes (with ignore-lists like uBlock has for ads)? I fully realize the impossibility of a handmade search inde

In Star Trek TNG there was a story arc that culminated in the reveal of a precursor humanoid race that had seeded their genome around the galaxy so that they ultimately resulted in the “big” races like humans, Klingons, Vulcans, Cardassians

Basically algorithmic complexity analysis often ignores the cost of accessing data because the underlying storage is sometimes unknown - be it in memory, on a spinning disc or on magnetic tape. Unfortunately that gives suboptimal algorithms

I found the best response is "Have a nice day" and hang up. While we hate them, they probably hate their job too. Being "nice" and not wasting my or their time means that they practically stopped calling me.

A motion triggered photo should then also be considered a selfie since the subject caused the photo to be taken, not the equipment owner. Imagine the ramifications of that for speed cameras. “You can’t use that image of me speeding! It’s co

I also have this issue with Spotify. I barely know the names of the bands/groups/dj's I listen to. I tend to have both a broad and narrow music taste at the same time. When I like one song from a band I rarely like their othe

I'm curious what you think of all the benchmarks that sais otherwise. In a race between a motorized lawn mower and a racecar - if the lawn mower wins which one is ultimately the best "racecar"?

Denmark also just decided to make the AZ vaccine (which is also dropped) voluntary in the sense that you can opt-in for getting it if you aren't afraid of the risks. I'm sure the J&J vaccine will follow. So not entirely droppe

On the (maybe?) reverse: I grew up on a farm and later moved to a big city to study computer science. It was only then that my allergy kicked in. I wonder if that would ever have happened if I had gone the farming route in life :P In any c

Didn't the exact same team who first discovered this later realize that they had similar (if not better) effects by simply diluting the subject(=mice)'s blood with a saline/albumin mixture? If I recall correctly it was simply

Looking forward to the eventual timelapse compilations. Seeing nature in fast-forward makes me feel so much in awe of how much is actually going on in the world.

I find it funny how it all boils down to symbolism. What we symbolize for others though what we wear. If you want to show others that you go for nonconformism then you have to use some common shared language to get that across - and that th

For a long time I thought of the sun as being the product of many cycles of recycled material from older suns - but if you look at the cosmic calendar our sun has been around for roughly half (a little less than) the age of the universe! Fo

As with almost everything it is a matter of tolerance levels. You can in some countries say someting is fat-free (or sugar-free) if it contains less than 0.5 grams per serving. Lactose-free stuff still contains a very small amount of lactos

The cookie policies and laws are broken. The ever-annoying cookie popups are breaking the internet in more ways than it fixes it. The choice to make each website show their own cookie selection screens is part of all this. I am one of the f
