I’m intrigued. Why cant true exponential growth of a physical system exist? Do you mean it can’t be maintained forever? I can think of lots of physical processes that have exponential behavior for some amount of time.

If you want an element that acts like gold (doesn’t oxidize, high electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity, malleable, etc.), you need gold. You can’t replace it with lead and get the same results. If you want a string of bits tha

How is that valuable, aside from ones ability to speculate on how much people will want it in the future? As an aside, I agree with the other poster that there is no intrinsic scarcity to bitcoin, because anyone can create bitcoinN which ar

Surely there is a difference between investments that have underlying value, but are speculated on, and investments which have no underlying value except that due to speculation.

I suggest we try an experiment. Appoint an austrian (say, Alan Greenspan) to run the US federal reserve. See if we get improved stability, or the largest recession since the Great Depression.

It’s not worth worrying about. If there is no such thing as free will, there is no point in trying to do anything (such as carefully choosing words to be consistent with the non-existence of free will). For simplicity, might as well live my

Nice article. I don’t believe in free will, but I never liked that Libet experiment. So many tenuous connections had to be made to connect electrical signals with free will, and most of the time people didn’t even bother trying - they just

I think the easiest answer: If it comes in a box or a bag with a list of ingredients, consider it processed. Occasionally eating something that comes in that form is okay - so making pasta from a once a week won’t kill you ( at least not qu

Author seems overly dismissive of the sequels. While they aren’t as great as the first, many of them are still very good books with interesting ideas. The stuff written by others (not Frank Herbert) on the other hand, does seem to be dreck

Hmmm. Make money selling blades? No, I got a better idea - give away the guillotine, make money selling the blades. Or perhaps a subscription model for the blades? Probably the best option is decapitation as a service.
