Every time I try an IDE (admittedly not very often) I end up frustrated that its Vim binding implementation is incomplete. It feels even worse than using its default bindings because I start to feel confident and then suddenly it doesn'

You're right to remind that the filesystem is a metaphor, a model and not the reality of what's going on on the computer. The thing is it's still the common denominator between different IDEs and text editors. IDEs cannot be

That is of course the correct answer. Smart people are like most people, they don't care about being rich.

Of course that's what we end up doing in practice, using external tools (CLI or IDE) to work around a limitation in expressiveness of the language. This advice is a testimony that there's indeed a problem upfront :) And it comes s

I've worked with Java, Ruby and Python but I don't get your point. Can you recommend any resource to help understand what you mean? Or maybe some short examples in Python and Ruby that would highlight how implicit imports allow so

I've worked with Ruby in the past and I currently work with Python and Elixir. This is a caveat that Elixir inherited from Ruby. In Elixir there's the `only` option of `import`, but it doesn't seem idiomatic to use it. In Pyt

I pulled that number as an exaggeration to illustrate the fact that even if "our civilization" survives (whatever it may mean), it doesn't mean things are going to be OK. Even if you make that 50% it's still not great ne

I don't understand how it is possible to still have this view of the problem. All the resources I am aware of that seem backed by facts and science are currently forecasting an utter disaster. I think I'm someone with a rather pos

Nice article! Also consider reading a book after you've got some practice. Things will make much more sense than if you do it without prior experience and you'll get much more in depth understanding of the subject.

If you're not exercising regularly and you have pain triggered by programming you should give exercise a chance. It has worked wonderfully for me. In my case just running 5k every week has done the trick. Pain went away magically and n

Last time I checked, Voilà was very slow for anything but the simplest dashboards. This may or may not be a problem depending on the context as instant page load isn't always needed but it's a an aspect to take into account. So my

Once upon a time, I was in a situation to stand against a project which I judged morally unacceptable. Colleagues actually reacted more harshly than management. "What are you doing!? This is work!", I was told, as if moral consid

Sure, you can achieve what Elixir does by combining a bunch of different components replicating its features, all with their different execution schemes, configuration syntax, deployment constraints. That's the whole point of Elixir, i

In fact the vast majority of our data processing is in Python but we also have some R and shell scripts. Elixir is great for orchestrating parallel data processing and building reactive UIs showing what's happening in real-time. The Er

As someone working in the weather field, the reference to xarray at the end of the article is very exciting. I imagine that eventuellay it will be possible to read NetCDF files and create dataframes based on Nx.

At a company I work for we manipulate a lot of weather data which comes in the form of big multi-dimensional arrays of numbers. We use Elixir but we delegate this data processing to Python using the xarray library. Nx is the foundation of a

I'm sorry but you misread the comment you replied to. It was taking analytic and continental philosophy as a whole (western philosophy) and was encouraging philosophy students to go beyond it and also look into non-western philosophy.
