Not to take away from the depravity of Japanese violence in WWII, but 300,000/7,000≈43. The rate was either higher, or “a matter of days” is probably the wrong term.

A space in an otherwise 8.3 file name would still be treated as a long file name and get a ~1 shot name alias.

At least in the Western United States, most hunting is done on publicly owned land, and there's enormous swaths of public land with absolutely zero cell phone coverage.

Apple was also first to bring multitouch and high DPI displays to consumers. They were slow with OLED, and they have also been slow with each new generation of cell phone radio standards.

Alternatively, let me choose the font sizes and weights and such independently. I don’t need to look at the same point size for two fonts, I need to look at two fonts where I set the size and whatever to be how I would set them in my code e

In my experience in the US, it's about the same. Although it seems my house doesn't get quite as sick as yours; I don't think I've ever been sick enough long enough to take 10 days off work.

If there's a $100,000 oscilloscope, then it's there to get used. Specifically, it's there to allow the >$100,000/year engineer to get their work done more quickly. And the engineer is there because the company think

A good point indeed! There are certainly grumpy controllers and a time for discipline, but there is a strong culture around continuous improvement and safety throughout aviation. A phone number from a controller is not nearly as adversaria

Typically in utility co-ops, every utility user is an owner. My local power company is a co-op. I get a vote on who is on the board. I get a dividend from time to time. They waste an inordinate amount of money on feel-good marketing crap j

On a recent trip home from the airport, there were 4 charging stations in range, three of which are 60kW, so I drove to the 150kW station. Except 3/4 of the chargers there were out of order, and the remaining one was going at 30kW and

It is quantized, but not necessarily to a power of two. RAM and flash sizes of 3x2^n are common even in contemporary microcontrollers, and it’s clearly possible to use fewer R chips then your bus decoder supports in the less integrated comp

I initially had the same reaction although having read the whole thread, the author convinced me that SUID is in fact a fatally flawed architecture and that run0's client-server architecture is correct.

I am of the opinion that far more than safety critical systems should use ECC. You should use ECC anytime bit flips might cost you more money then the ECC does, which is why I insist on ECC for my desktop computers.

At work we make a hardware product, and among other things, it has a small microcontroller on it. We keep several hundred instances of our product to run automated integration tests. At that scale, we find SRAM bit-flips one of the microc

It's always seemed crazy to me that the TPMs are separate chips rather than being integrated with the CPU; at least in the same package if not on the same die. That would make the bar for attacks like this much much higher.
