And between those who don’t want remote work. Who enjoy building real relationships with people and brain storming ideas on a whiteboard. Remote work feels like contracting, and when everyone is a contractor is it really a cohesive company?

I was one of those juniors, the rapid shift to remote work ruined me. I had just moved to a new city where I knew no one to start a life doing the work I loved, and all at once I got told leaving my house was dangerous and to stay home alon

It’s not for everyone, but people who don’t already have an entire life outside of work struggle to start one when the majority of your day is spent alone staring at a screen. The idea that socializing at work is a bad thing I think isolate

Definitely, 10 minute mail is great for this, or if you actually want to keep the login you can use “masked email” through fastmail and 1password which I recommend. That being said, most people don’t use the internet this way, and websites

Glad to not see an auth wall, sites like this have been used in the past to collect and sell email addresses.

- RTO is entirely about sharing 3D spaces with those you collaborate, agree that if the team you work directly with is distributed there’s little value to RTO to me, direct team in office and other teams distributed seems more common - ther

I find this kind of debate can be polarizing because people have such different mindsets and perspectives on the world. If you view the office as just a “fine layer of snot”, I can only imagine what you think of the subway, or a mall. But p

The Semafor article just reports that the Propublica story is being reviewed, with the review being later published in the editor’s note which you linked. Do you have any reputable sources that criticize Propublica’s response as being inacc

Maybe in a lab setting, but implemented on the streets real life kicks in. Here’s an example in SF where “provide information and services to get help” is laughable: https://youtu.be/7g5Mb-ktGxQ?t=180

Yup, they got distracted and didn’t seem to focus on their core mission. So much focus on crypto, then growth features like “media bias”, then AI which they had zero hope in winning. It felt like they were always chasing their tail.

I think a perfect example of this is sports. Sports results are objectively better on Neeva than google, in part because they’re not ad driven and can return immersive full page experiences. But I think they got distracted with crypto and A

Just another voice in the shouting match, but my old roommate in college works directly on WADU in Columbus and this post is dramatically blown out of proportion. It’s fueled by a lot of genuine anti RTO sentiment, but the HD video feed tha

I don’t think anyone is trying to make anyone upset, it’s just research on how prevalent PFAS are. At a minimum, the hundreds of contact lenses I’ve thrown away in my life will almost never break down fully in a landfill, but I’m sure they’

Seems it was flagged again, and then was unflagged again? How common are these kind of seemingly coordinated attempts to manipulate HN (assuming there is indeed nothing actually wrong with OP)?

SF is disgusting, and SV in general is so expensive to live in and enjoy. It feels unsustainable for a region to profit so much from remote work that itself is so bad to live in if you aren’t already successful. People can just ignore the h

But then how do companies capture both? Offices with only junior, single, social seekers kind of defeats all the benefits that those people are searching for. Do we just leave the first group behind to better benefit the second group?

It’s not about a social life outside my job, it’s about also loving my work and enjoying what I do. Anyone can trade time for money and use that money outside work. But true success to me is loving both, and to me that’s not possible withou

People who love remote work seem to be senior, well established employees who were already fully ramped up and had a social foundation in SV before the pandemic. I left my entire life behind after college to relocate to SV; I loved working
